Position Summary
Position is a professional, administrative and technical position will apply and implement building and safety codes and other applicable codes and standards. Works under general supervision of the Chief, Permits and Inspections.
Position Responsibilities
1. Enforce County regulations by reviewing and evaluating construction documents and plans.
2. Interacts with consultants, architects, engineers, developers and the general public in the review of plans.
3. As necessary, perform on-site inspections at in-progress construction sites to verify full compliance with codes and plans.
4. Prepare correspondence/reports in regards to plans and applicable codes.
5. Establish and maintain accurate and complete files.
6. Provides response to inquiries and complaints from the public.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education
High School Diploma or G.E.D. Associates degree in construction preferred.
Experience
Minimum of one (1) year experience in one of the building trades or as a building inspector.
*An interested candidate with an equivalent combination of education and experience as listed above may be considered.
Certificate(s) and/or License(s)
1. Possession of a valid Class “C” non-commercial driver’s license with no more than three (3) points.
2. Must obtain certification as a Residential Plans Examiner and certification as a Building Plans Examiner by the International Code Council (ICC) within one (1) year.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Ability to review and interpret engineered or architectural drawings, blueprints, maps and other technical materials.
2. Thorough knowledge of all applicable County and State codes and guidelines, regulations, and standards for construction.
3. Working knowledge of building construction materials, methods and the inspection process.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, contractors, and developers both orally and written.
5. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship demonstrating tact and diplomacy in all situations with co-workers, contractors, other business professionals and the general public.
6. Ability to perform technical research.
Miscellaneous Position Information
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This role may involve occasional strenuous effort, such as handling moderately heavy boxes, tools, equipment, or other materials; walking or climbing over uneven surfaces; and sitting/standing in fixed position for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted on a regular basis. General conditions involve working at a computer, using telephonic equipment, and interfacing regularly with internal and/or external stakeholders.
Work environment involves moderate risk with exposure to potentially dangerous conditions, such as those typically found on constructions sites. These conditions may require safety precautions, such as personal protective equipment including but not limited to hard hats, eye and/or hearing protections, reflective vests, inclement weather protection.
Work is normally performed Monday through Friday during normal business hours, however, may require alternate work hours 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
Individuals appointed or promoted to a position in this class will be required to serve a probationary period of six (6) months. Performance will be carefully evaluated during the probationary period. Continuation in this class will be contingent upon successful completion of the probationary period.

1. Prior to appointment, employees are subject to pre-employment medical history review and drug testing, extensive background investigation (which may require CJIS and NCIS clearance), including but not limited to reference checking, and driving history, and an evaluation of training or experience.
