Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Housing Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in assisting individuals and families in securing safe and affordable housing. This position requires strong negotiation skills, an understanding of housing laws, and the ability to manage crises effectively. The Housing Specialist will work closely with clients, property managers, and various housing programs to ensure compliance with Fair Housing regulations and provide support throughout the housing process.
Responsibilities
- Assess client needs and eligibility for various housing programs, including Section 8 and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) properties.
- Negotiate lease agreements and rental terms with landlords on behalf of clients.
- Provide crisis intervention and management services to clients facing housing instability or emergencies.
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions, applications, and housing placements using property management software such as Yardi or OneSite.
- Educate clients on their rights under Fair Housing regulations and assist them in navigating the application process for housing assistance programs.
- Collaborate with community organizations and service providers to connect clients with additional resources and support services.
- Conduct regular follow-ups with clients to ensure ongoing satisfaction with their housing situation and address any emerging issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, public administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in property management or a similar role is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of housing laws, Fair Housing regulations, and crisis intervention strategies.
- Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to advocate effectively for clients’ needs.
- Familiarity with software systems such as Yardi or OneSite is a plus.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with a compassionate approach towards clients facing challenging situations.
