JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Fire Chief, this position will be responsible for supervising and overseeing the Wildland Firefighters and the District’s Wildland Program. Including various other roles but not limited to the prevention and mitigation of wildland emergencies and disasters, through proper planning, fuels projects, public education and code enforcement. Responds to emergencies and disasters, responds to emergencies involving wildland fire, medical or environmental concerns and oversees the safety of crew members and the public at all times.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Supervision of Wildland Firefighters and Wildland programs
  • Decision-making skills which require discretion, judgment and speed
  • Responsibility for care, condition and use of materials, equipment and tools
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the District’s Wildland Program, training and skills for Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs
  • Respond promptly and potentially take command at Wildland fire incidents
  • Actively solicit and coordinate Wildland deployments and prevention activities
  • Supervise Fire District staff in the areas of training and logistics, including directing work, evaluating performance, etc
  • Maintain complete and detailed Wildland reports and invoices
  • Conduct and coordinate Wildland training and all certifications with the Utah Division of Fire, Forestry and State Lands
  • Plan and put forth the annual red card pack test for all members of the department and complete all necessary paperwork
  • Ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of apparatus and Wildland Station
  • Responsible for Wildland prevention activities and projects including participation commitment match and associated documentation
  • Attend and participate in meetings with Chief Officers and staff members

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a minimum of three years of progressive Wildland Firefighting experience with previous experience as Crew Boss and/or Engine Boss
  • Requires valid Utah Driver’s License
  • NWCG M-410, Facilitative Instructor certification preferred
  • Engine Boss qualification
  • Pumps certification
  • Wildland Saws qualification
  • Wildland Air Ops certification
  • Preferred to have Incident Commander Type 5 qualification
  • Preferred to have EMT or higher EMS certification in the State of Utah
  • Preferred to have Structural fire certification in the State of Utah
  • Knowledge of:
  • Utah Wildland Firefighting programs
  • Training and staff development in Wildland Firefighting programs
  • Wildland fire equipment and programs, including tactics and fire behavior
  • Fire District policies and procedures
  • International Fire Code
  • International Wildland Urban Interface Code
  • Origin and cause determination
  • Site plan review and examination
  • District prevention programs
  • Fire ground procedures
  • Incident command procedures
  • Inspection procedures
  • Operation and maintenance of District apparatus and equipment
  • Safety procedures
  • Operation of all Wildland Fire suppression equipment, telephone, computer and printers
  • Basic working knowledge of maintenance and repair of hand tools, pumps, chainsaws and small engines

WORKING CONDITIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Contacts with other governmental agencies, furnishing and obtaining information
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, elected and appointed officials, supervisors, firefighters, and the public
  • Must be able to make sound decisions with minimal guidelines during emergency and non-emergency situations; establish goals and priorities; organize time; must have a well-developed sense of strategy and timing
  • Organize, delegate and establish meaningful goals
  • Evaluate and analyze data to make recommendations
  • Duties of job require moderate to heavy physical exertion; constant seeing and hearing; constant attendance; must be able to wear and work in breathing apparatus and personal protective equipment
  • Requires great muscular exertion, stooping, kneeling, climbing and balancing
  • Maintain personal fitness in order to effectively perform essential duties of the job
  • Great mental pressure and fatigue exist during an average day due to exposure to difficult situations, contact with the public and deadlines; exposure to emergency situations that involve dangerous and disagreeable conditions including smoke, heights, fire, stress, hazardous materials, communicable diseases, excessive noise, fumes, heat, cold, water, emergency driving, etc.

BENEFITS AND WORK HOURS:

  • $35 - $38 per hour, DOE
  • Medical Insurance paid by Employer, Dental and Vision Insurance paid by Employee
  • URS (Utah Retirement System) participant
  • Vacation, Sick, Comp and Holiday PTO
  • Take home vehicle, if employee meets District requirements
  • A 40 hour work week position, fulfilled with 4-10 hour days, the district may need to utilize this position as a 48-96 hour employee if deemed necessary by the Fire Chief
  • This position will be ready and expected to take wildland deployments anytime of the year, but especially from May 1st, through October 31st each year
  • This position is an At-Will position and will be maintained by this employee based on their work ethic, professionalism, and productivity
  • This position will be in a probationary status for 1 year
