The Center for People is a dynamic non-profit organization that provides innovative services and programs to the low-income community in Lincoln, Nebraska, addressing basic needs and providing opportunities to achieve economic independence for our clients.

The Center has been fighting poverty in Lincoln, Nebraska since 2003. We are the Food Bank of Lincoln's largest partner, distributing food to more than 5,400 low-income families. We are also home to Lincoln's first Diaper Bank, established to meet the growing need for diapers in our community. Education is the key to helping low-income individuals obtain economic independence. As such, the Center developededucational and training programs to help people obtain employment with a living wage.

We are currently looking for a Nutrition Equity and Outreach Specialist. This position is a full-time, 40 hour per week, onsite position.

The Nutrition Equity and Outreach Specialist works directly with individuals and families experiencing poverty to provide practical, hands-on education about making the most of foods available from food pantries. This role focuses on teaching affordable, nutritious meal preparation, food safety, and storage techniques while addressing the systemic barriers to food equity. The specialist collaborates with food pantry staff and community organizations to empower participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare healthy meals for themselves and their families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct in-person and virtual cooking demonstrations, classes, and workshops tailored to foods commonly available in food pantries.

  • Teach participants how to stretch limited food resources while maintaining nutritional quality.
  • Provide education on safe food handling, preparation, and storage to prevent waste and foodborne illnesses.
  • Share tips on incorporating fresh produce and other pantry staples into balanced, affordable meals.
  • Develop culturally relevant and accessible recipes, meal plans, and educational materials using pantry-sourced ingredients.
  • Create step-by-step guides for meal preparation and storage, ensuring materials are user-friendly and visually engaging.
  • Design and implement interactive, hands-on cooking sessions that accommodate diverse learning styles.
  • Collaborate with food pantry staff, volunteers, and local organizations to identify and address the specific needs of participants.
  • Facilitate discussions with participants to understand their barriers to healthy eating and food preparation.
  • Partner with local chefs, dietitians, and community leaders to co-host events and expand programming.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to proactively think, plan, problem solve and execute resourcefully
  • Ability to work independently and to handle multiple projects and priorities
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Self-directed with great attention to detail
  • Strong teaching and facilitation skills, especially for hands-on, practical workshops.
  • Ability to create and adapt recipes using limited and variable food supplies.
  • Knowledge of food safety, nutrition basics, and meal planning strategies.
  • DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • A degree or experience in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science, or a related field.
  • Certification in food safety (e.g., ServSafe) is highly desirable.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT

    Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, such as boxes of pantry supplies, cooking equipment, or educational materials, as well as extended periods of standing during cooking demonstrations and workshops. The position also involves occasional setup and breakdown of event spaces, including moving tables, chairs, or cooking equipment.

    The Specialist will work closely with individuals and families experiencing poverty, requiring empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity. Regular collaboration with volunteers, pantry staff, community leaders, and organizational partners is an integral part of the role. Adherence to food safety and handling protocols is essential during workshops and food preparation activities, as well as compliance with workplace health and safety guidelines when working in community spaces.
