OVERVIEW

The emergency shelter team provides survival-support services to homeless and runaway youth 24 hours / day, 7 days / week, year-round. Staff engage and establish mutually respectful, trusting relationships with the youth we serve. Clients are approached from a strength and asset-based perspective and staff form partnerships with them to help facilitate the identification of issues and concerns and the develop strategies to meet those needs. The ultimate goal is to provide emergency care and support to RHY in a safe, respectful environment and to work with them to resolve the issues which led to their homelessness so that they can ultimately secure and maintain a stable living environment.

The Lead Emergency Shelter Counselor assists the Manager in oversight of daily operations and programming at The Center House. Duties include : supervision of staff, volunteers and interns; administrative assignments; and direct client care as well as mentoring / coaching Emergency Shelter Counselors in their roles and responsibilities. This position will also assist Monroe County DSS in referring youth for Respite Care at the Shelter. See below for additional Respite responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EXAMPLE OF DUTIES :

Administrative responsibilities include :

  • Staff orientation and training
  • Individual supervision
  • Group supervision co-facilitation
  • Relief-Counselor team oversight (i.e., screening, hiring, orientation, professional development, supervision)
  • Coordination with Triage Counselors
  • Teaming Emergency Shelter Support Counselors (unit)
  • Quality Assurance- both program and client
  • Consultation- both program and client
  • Respite Coordination-

Assessing referrals from Monroe County DSS

  • Communicating and planning with respite youths' County case workers
  • Maintaining respite placement data in Penelope and other agency files
  • Basic and Independent Life Skills Program-
  • Curriculum development

  • Implementation oversight
  • Documentation
  • Impact measurement
  • Quality assurance
  • Staff training
  • EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES :

    Candidates must be :

  • Youth friendly and positive
  • Calm and objective in crisis situations
  • Sensitive to the cultural issues and needs of staff and clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders (i.e., youth, peers, supervisees, referral sources, law enforcement)
  • Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed and assigned
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    The Center House is a three-story residence and candidates must be autonomously mobile and able to work anywhere within the facility. Candidates must be able to participate in the maintenance of the facility and grounds and to operate program motor vehicles (vans).

    QUALIFICATIONS :

    Bachelors Degree in Human Services related field and minimum of 2 years experience working with adolescents, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid NYS driver's license, automobile insurance at the level of $300,000 per accident / $100,000 per person Bodily Injury and $50,000 Property Damage and regular access to a motor vehicle is required.
