Essential Functions
Under general supervision of the Superintendent or Designee, the Activities Director substantially and effectively provides leadership for all 7-12 athletic and activity programs and operations in compliance with guidelines and regulations determined by the administration, Board of Education, state and federal agencies. The Activities Director will support and enhance the district’s educational program in conjunction with serving as the primary educator, overseer, enforcer, and interpreter of regulations for athletics and activities. The Athletic Director will utilize all the resources available to establish a cooperative relationship with parents, staff members and administrators to support each student's opportunity to learn and grow in educational and life experiences. The position of Activities Director shall include active participation in the school's operations that support a positive learning environment and will perform the following responsibilities within the overarching framework of the Iowa Standards for School Leaders (ISSL) including any other duties as assigned:
INSTRUCTIONAL:
- Coordinates the all PK-12 school activity-related programs in collaboration with principals and coaches to ascertain programmatic needs on an annual basis, as well as prior to each season to insure consistency of programs.
- Initiates the recruitment and selection of coaches and makes employment recommendations to administration.
- Supervises and annually evaluates all varsity level head coaches and sponsors. Works in conjunction with varsity level head coaches/sponsors to evaluate other coaching positions in the program.
- Responsible for scheduling all activity-related contests, issues contracts for the contest, and maintains the proper and necessary records.
- Ensures officials are scheduled and contracts are issued for all appropriately-related activities.
- Coordinates the scheduling of transportation for all off-site activities (contests, etc.).
- Supervises the preparation and verifies all athletic or activity eligibility lists.
- Oversees the supervision of all volunteers who work in the athletic or activity programs.
- Supervises activity funds, prepares and administers a detailed operating budget for the programs, and submits it to the school administration.
- Works with varsity level head coaches/sponsors to supervises all equipment and maintains a current inventory of all program and related equipment.
- Advises and ensures all coaches conform with Board, OHSAA, and related Association policies and regulations along with state and federal laws.
- Attends league, conference, district, and state meetings.
- Ensures all coaches have successfully completed required trainings and certifications.
- Supervises and is responsible for preparation for home activities and events.
- Provides leadership for and serves as liaison to appropriate Booster groups and coordinates with the coaches to provide for appropriate support and partnership.
- Develops and delivers methods to evaluate varsity level programs.
- Responsible for approval and scheduling of district facilities for school activities and community-based use.
- Responsible for communication of all activities to stakeholders
- Other duties as assigned
STUDENT MANAGEMENT:
- Involved in maximizing opportunities for student success by creating positive mentoring and working relationships with students and colleagues.
- Be a role model for students regarding life-long learning and professional behavior.
- Establish and implement positive behavior and ownership strategies to improve student behavior and resolve disciplinary issues.
- Provide students with additional instruction as required if they need support in academic skill development.
PROFESSIONAL:
- Maintain positive staff, student, parent, and community relations.
- Works closely with the site principal(s) to collaboratively lead the school through shared decision-making processes.
- Cooperates with other professional staff members to identify student needs and develop assessments to solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Participates in faculty committees, meetings and other faculty sponsored programs supporting the educational program.
- Demonstrates regular and timely attendance.
- Networking and collegiality, mutual support, and deep individual and collective reflection and expected amongst staff.
- Promotes a positive image of public education; willingly engages with community and business partners to be incorporated as a resource in curriculum development and student projects.
- Attend and participate in required in-service activities as related to the school and/or district.
- Meet deadlines; maintain appropriate records and prepare progress reports as required; follow district promotion policy.
- Follows District and Schools’ policies.
Education and Licensure
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.
- Hold or is eligible for an Iowa Professional Administrator License with Evaluator’s Approval.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience required including coaching
- Preferred two (2) years successful administrative experience required.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:
- Articulation and broad knowledge and background in:
- Curriculum, assessment, professional learning and development, school improvement, and student achievement strategies along with ability to evaluate the effectiveness of all programs
- Current PK-12 teaching methods and educational pedagogy as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles and behavioral management methods.
- Highly organized and able to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills.
- Able to make difficult decisions with a long-term impact on the school as aligned to district’s mission.
- Competent in research and information-gathering through technology.
- Valid driver’s license.
Required Qualifications:
- Holds a current Iowa BOEE License
- Experience as a varsity head coach
Preferred Qualifications:
- Variety of coaching/sponsor experience
- 3-5 Years’ Experience as an Activities Director
- Holds Iowa Administrator License
- Holds an evaluator approval certification
- Building Leadership experience

The Superintendent or Designee will annually evaluate the job performance of the Activities Director in accordance with federal and state law, board policy, the ISSL Standards, and the preceding job description.
