We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Specimen Collector to join our team at Centers Laboratory in Newark, NJ.
About the Role:
As a Medical Specimen Collector, you will be responsible for drawing blood from patients and collecting other medical specimens. This is a critical role that requires excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately identify patients using wristbands, documents, or visual identification
- Assemble necessary supplies and equipment for specimen collection
- Determine the best venipuncture method based on patient age and health
- Reassure patients and help them relax during the blood draw process
- Collect blood samples using proper techniques and equipment
- Properly dispose of sharps and medical waste
- Label test tubes correctly and send or deliver them for testing
- Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples for testing
- Maintain accurate patient records
Requirements:
- High school degree or equivalent
- Phlebotomy Technician certificate preferred
- Completion of a hospital or major lab training program (if no certificate)
- Understanding of standard blood drawing practices and procedures
- 2 years of proven experience as a phlebotomist
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends
- Strict adherence to safety regulations and procedures
