The Centra Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for assisting his or her Unit Leader (Manager or Director) in the coordination of professional nursing practice activities for a specified patient care area. The Assistant Nurse Manager utilizes, role models and mentors others in the nursing process, coordination of patient care (including staffing and scheduling best practices) as well as in the use of current evidence-based nursing practice interventions. The Assistant Nurse Manager provides leadership and support to his or her team which promotes excellence in nursing practice and staff engagement. The Assistant Nurse Manager may act on behalf of the Unit Manager/Director in their absence. The Assistant Nurse Manager may work various shifts to meet the needs of the department. In this role, the individual will be expected to work part in a clinical as well as an administrative role – splitting their time in either role as necessary to meet the needs of the department.
Education
Graduate of School of Nursing. BSN or Bachelors in another field and MSN. If candidate does not have BSN or MSN, must complete within 24 months of hire.
Work Experience
Two (2) years of nursing experience
Previous Charge Nurse or other Leadership Experience
Licenses & Certifications Minimum
Licensed a RN in state of Virginia (may hold compact license)
Hold current AHA BLS card
Within two (2) years of hire, will obtain certification in leadership or area of specialty
Job Responsibilities
1. Duties and responsibilities include those required of the clinical nurse, preceptor and charge nurse role.
2. The Assistant Nurse Manager assists with direct patient care as needed to ensure that staffing needs are met - supervises and coordinates the delivery of patient care (maintains unit competencies).
3. Assists the Nurse Manager/Director in assuring that new staff orientation plans are developed and completed.
4. Assists Nurse Manager/Director in the development of the unit budget and in meeting productivity targets.
5. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with patients, their families and nursing colleagues.
6. Collaborates with Nurse Manager/Director in improving flow and capacity processes through collaborative interdepartmental work relationships.
7. Effectively leads and teaches knowledge/skills necessary to provide safe patient care.
8. Serves as a resource for safety and quality initiatives.
9. Oversees unit scheduling with Nurse Manager/Director to ensure adequate staffing plans are developed.
10. Coordinates and may be asked to conduct staff education.
11. Works with Nurse Manager/Director to create action plans for regulatory compliance, experience and quality outcomes as well as monitors compliance with these plans.
12. Rounds on patients to evaluate patient care, environment and staff performance.
13. Fosters teamwork through ongoing coaching, feedback and encouraging staff input with decision-making, resolution of conflict, and collegiality among all health team members.
14. Participates with Unit Manager/Director in the interview process of new staff.
15. Assists Nurse Manager/Director in personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions and other related activities.
16. Provides immediate support on policy, procedures, equipment and supplies as needed.
17. Provides service recovery as needed.
18. Models and supports diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
19. Collaborates with Nurse Manager/Director on maintaining and monitoring supplies for appropriate inventory-may oversee appropriate utilization and charging of unit inventory.
20. Encourages and facilitates participation of unit-based staff on department and organization wide councils/committees.
21. Facilitates assignments that support learning for the orientee or nurse learner.
22. Assists Nurse Manager/Director with timekeeping.
23. Attends departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
24. Coordinates, facilitates, participates or directs departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up.
25. Other projects and duties as directed by the department manager.
Other
This is an hourly position (non-exempt). These individuals are eligible for overtime and shift/weekend differentials. These individuals are not eligible for critical needs bonus, preceptor or charge differentials.
