The Instructional Designer will assist with the overall educational experience by collaborating with faculty and other key stakeholders to assess course design and to help develop and provide trainings on course design and course management strategies to improve student retention. The instructional designer will utilize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to train faculty on creating instructional materials that cater to diverse learning styles and ensure accessibility for all students. The instructional designer will focus on employing innovative strategies that will involve integrating cutting-edge educational technologies and pedagogical approaches to enhance engagement and knowledge retention. This position will work with a team of stakeholders to develop learning materials that address the needs of a diverse student population, fostering an educational experience that is accessible, empowering, and supportive of every learner's success.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of a series of professional development trainings utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to teach faculty best practices for content creation, course design, and structure.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to develop an ongoing plan of assessing course content, course design, course procedures, and course management strategies to improve student retention.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to develop a plan for accessing course content accessibility, using UDL, Blackboard Ally, and other technologies to intentionally address equity, inclusion, and accessibility through inclusive pedagogy. The instructional designer will help develop and provide training on accessibility and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Work collaboratively with the IT – Manager for Learning Technology and the Director of Faculty Teaching and Learning to analyze the instructional needs of the classroom and the technology needs of the course/students.
  • Assist with training for faculty and staff in producing and delivering distance learning, utilizing best practices and instructional design methodologies in conjunction with the Learning Technology Team.
  • Integrate the usage of Blackboard and other collaborative technologies within a constantly changing technological environment.
  • The Instructional Designer will work collaboratively with an ongoing team of CAC Stakeholders, including the Director of Faculty Teaching and Learning, the IT Manager of Learning Technology, LMS Specialists, the Director of Student Accessibility Services, the faculty, and the Faculty Senate.  
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Title V to align efforts, strategies, and actions with the grant's objectives. Work as a team to ensure the successful implementation and achievement of the grant's goals.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, or a related discipline.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of related instructional design experience in online or hybrid learning environments.  
Background Verification:  As a condition of employment, all candidates accepting an offer of employment for a full-time, part- time, temporary, student worker, or volunteer position, will be required to undergo a Background Verification.  Employment with Central Arizona College is contingent upon the successful completion of the background verification.  The level the background verification for this position is: Standard level.
  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Knowledge of best practices for course design, content creation, and pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of information technology, technology of pedagogy, and distance learning.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards, including WCAG.
  • Knowledge of integrating technology and education, including teaching methodologies, curriculum development, and instructional design.
  • Exceptional patience, interpersonal skills with strong customer service orientation, and ability to provide user support and education to faculty and staff with multiple levels of experience and understanding of Blackboard Learn and Blackboard Collaborate.
  • Knowledge and skill in best practices for delivering training in multiple modalities.
  • Knowledge of Open Educational Resources.
  • Ability to work within a strategic plan that positions CAC as a leader among rural and all Arizona community colleges in innovative pedagogy and inclusive curriculum.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are applied to interaction with staff, leadership, faculty, students, and the public.
  • Skill, experience, and understanding of work in an institution with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population and understanding of and commitment to the equity goals of the College.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in accomplishing tasks.
  • Ability to analyze situations, develop solutions, and make independent decisions.
  • A team player who works well with others and contributes to a positive college culture.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10 lbs) and easy-to-handle materials. Duties performed cause light fatigue of the eyes, fingers, or other facilities due to long periods of standing, sitting, and repetitive motion.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: 
The position requires effective communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a diverse educational setting. This includes the ability to build positive relationships with students, faculty, and colleagues, actively listen to students' needs, and demonstrate cultural sensitivity to create an inclusive learning environment. Collaboration with various stakeholders, effective communication with faculty, and adaptability in communication styles are essential for promoting student success through the Structured Learning Assistance program and aligning efforts with grant objectives.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS: The job is performed in a general office or comparable work area with occasional distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.

Important Notice: As a condition of employment, all full time Central Arizona College employee’s automatically become members of the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). This is a pension system that requires mandatory contributions from the employee with a matching contribution from the employer.  The 24-25 fiscal year contribution rate is 12.27%.  Please note this rate is subject to change on a fiscal year basis.
