What are the responsibilities and job description for the Authorization Clerk position at Central Coast Orthopedic Medical Group?
We are looking for an Authorizations Clerk for our orthopedic clinic in San Luis Obispo. We are a physician-owned medical group and leader in the community for orthopedic care with 3 offices on the Central Coast.
This position is full time, weekdays only, in San Luis Obispo, CA.

As an Authorizations Clerk, you will be responsible for obtaining insurance authorizations and referrals for all patients needing surgery, diagnostic testing, medication as well as any other treatment that is required to be preauthorized by the patient’s insurance company. You will be the contact person to all ancillary facilities and hospitals and surgery centers regarding all authorization statuses; therefore, you must have a friendly phone demeanor, outgoing personality, compassion, and love working with people.
You will be a part of a team of Authorization Clerks. You must be a reliable employee that we can count on, a team player, and present a professional demeanor to all our patients and ancillary providers. Being able to communicate well is a must as well as having experience with clerical and computer skills.
You will be using our electronic medical software in a fast-paced environment. We handle personal, private health and financial information for our patients; therefore, you must be highly detail-oriented and respect patient confidentiality at all time.
Job Responsibilities:
~ Obtaining authorizations and pre-certs as required by the individual insurance company for surgeries and other medical treatment such as, tests, physical therapy and medications, etc.
~ Processes all information required to complete referrals prioritizing by level of urgency and patient need.
~ Completes prior authorization transaction and notifies requesting MD or MA of any issues.
~ Accurately enter notes regarding letters or correspondence from insurance companies regarding insurance authorization or other notifications.
~ Inform patients of referral status.
~ Answers telephone inquiries on status of referral.
~ Performs other duties as necessary.
