Position: Communication Specialist

Hours of Work: M-F, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

PURPOSE
The Communications Specialist provides support to the Office of the President-Communications Department in expanding the Tribe’s communications materials and online. Incumbent will develop collaborative relationships and work closely with the Tribe’s management team and staff to document tribal activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conducts interviews to draft articles, public service announcements, news releases and other content for publication, website and social media
- Assists in the design and editing of publications and other communications materials
- Assists in producing web-based multi-media projects
- Works with and directly supports Tlingit & Haida departments regarding media activities and production of informational materials
- Assists in managing and expanding the Tribe’s social media presence
- Assists in updating and managing the Tribe’s website
- Assists in organizing and prioritizing projects
- Design and develop print materials and audio/video production using a multitude of social media platforms
NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Strong writing skills and ability to communicate effectively
- Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro)
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, multitask, manage complex workload and handle pressure with strong follow-through and attention to detail
- Proficient with online communications and social media tools such as Facebook, Instagram, Blue Sky, and TikTok and website content management systems
- Ability to work effectively with managers, employees, tribal leaders and tribal citizens
- Strong working knowledge of communications principles and practices
- Demonstrated skills in project management
- Capable of maintaining confidentiality with a high degree of accuracy regarding information collection and recording
- Familiarity with Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures
- Ability to work an adjusted schedule as needed to accommodate evening and weekend events
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
- Associates Degree or any combination of education and/or experience year for year.
- Two (2) years experience in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design or Public Relations related fields
- Two (2) years experience using Adobe Creative Cloud software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) in a work setting
- Two (2) years experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) in a work setting
- Experience using camera or video equipment in a professional setting
- Must be 21 years of age with a valid Driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
- Bachelor degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design or Public Relations, or minimum of six years communication/marketing experience
- Journalism experience with a high level of editorial skills
- Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
- Proven social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge
- Experience in photography and video production
- Experience in conceptualizing project ideas and translating into camera-ready copy
UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
