Paraeducator I

:

The Paraeducator I is responsible for working with certificated staff in providing assistance to students in classrooms or other learning environments as assigned. Position location is subject to transfer as program needs dictate. The Paraeducator I shall be evaluated periodically by the Building Principal/Supervisor pursuant to the currently established district procedures, evaluation criteria, and collective bargaining agreement. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the essential job functions as listed below.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Copy of high school diploma or equivalent – documentation required at time of application. College coursework in education or experience with children having learning or behavioral disabilities preferred

2. Official transcript with evidence of AA degree or higher or 48 semester or 72 quarter college-level credit hours or copy of ParaPro Assessment with score of 461 or higher - documentation required at time of application

3. Ability to stoop, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, climb stairs, and stand for long periods of time

4. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds

5. Valid CPR/1st Aid card desired

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multicultural and diverse socio-economic setting

7. Valid Washington State driver’s license

8. All Paraeducators will have to complete the State required trainings within the Paraeducator Board designated timelines. Central Kitsap School District will provide the guidelines and determine the trainings required for the Fundamental Course of Study Certificate. This qualification begins after officially hired.

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

1. Serve as an active, productive and collegial team member, who values, builds and maintains supportive relationships with students, staff, parents and community members

2. Maintain confidentiality

3. Assist students in one-to-one and small group settings to provide additional learning support including but not limited to social skills, vocabulary, writing, reading, library, math, social studies, natural and computer science

4. Assist students in dealing with conflict, expressing themselves in appropriate ways and improving their behavior

5. Assist teacher in planning and adapting instructional materials and activities as directed

6. Coordinate activities and meet with teacher(s) on a regular basis

7. Administer tests and evaluate student progress in topical area and grade assignments and tests as directed

8. Assist teacher(s) in the maintenance of student records

9. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of aiding students and providing a safe and positive learning environment.

10. Answer phones, maintain records, collect and distribute materials, inventory and order and process materials

11. Escort students to and from locations

12. Drive District vehicles including up to a nine-passenger van

13. Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours

14. Assist students with making speech sounds; improving rhythm, fluency, and voice quality; and helping correct oral motor problems and cognitive communication impairments

15. Professionally interact with students, staff and public

16. Manage and lead students through prescribed activities while promoting independence

17. Uphold and assist in enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy

18. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities

19. Requires the use of multiple communication and technology systems, which may include electronic mail, computers, document cameras, smart boards and web-based resources.

20. Perform related duties as assigned

8. Knowledge of learning and instructional strategies appropriate to assigned grade levels and individual students

9. Skills in written and oral communications

10. Skills in learning and interpreting assignments, procedures, rules and regulations

11. Skills in encouraging and tutoring students

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.62 - $29.49 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 32.50 per week
