TECHNOLOGY TRAINER I/II/III

The Technology Trainer I/II/III is a member of the Technology Awareness and Training Team (TATT) within the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) within the Office of Information Technology (OIT). This team member’s primary functions include, but are not limited to, 1) learning a wide variety of technologies (hardware, software, and systems) to a level of a proficiency, 2) sharing their knowledge and developing the skills of staff, faculty, and students throughout the university community via in-person and virtual instructor-led training sessions, 3) developing detailed support documentation and tutorials in written and multimedia formats, 4) increasing awareness of technology resources available to members of the CMU community, and 5) acting as a collaborative consultant and support resource for individuals and organizations throughout implementation. As this position progresses through the levels, direct responsibilities and independent work increases.

Required Qualifications
Technology Trainer Level I:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
2-5 years of documented professional experience with increasing responsibility working in training or roles related to professional development, information technology, education, educational technology, training program design and development, technical writing, or a similar field.
Aptitude to rapidly learn and re-teach complex software, hardware, processes, and systems.
Desire to identify, learn, and promote the use of technology with a purpose.
Skills to effectively create awareness of technologies (hardware, software, and systems) in a manner that creates end user interest.
Demonstrated ability to articulate technical information to non-technical users.
History of planning, preparing, and delivering training sessions to a wide variety of end user audiences.
Experience facilitating in-room and virtual instructor-led training sessions.
Experience creating current, accurate, and effective self-paced tutorials and documentation about technology-related topics.
Skills identifying and vetting external training resources and opportunities for end users.
Ability to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with students, colleagues, and university partners.
Knowledge of content management systems and web environments.
Comfortable using a variety of mediated classroom and presentation technologies.
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Competence with Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
Demonstrated skills managing time, multiple projects, and responsibilities, independently and as part of a team.
Familiarity with and confidence using web conferencing software.
Ability to represent OIT on a variety of university-wide project teams and workgroups with guidance from higher level staff.
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong problem-solving ability.
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure of deadlines.
Broad knowledge of Information Technology industry.

Technology Trainer Level II:
Meets or exceeds all requirements of Technology Trainer I and;
6 – 10 years of documented professional experience with increasing responsibility working in training or roles related to professional development, information technology, education, educational technology, training program design and development, technical writing, or a similar field.
Proven and documented experience of successfully training and supporting users throughout the implementation of technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Advanced knowledge of content management systems and web environments.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with excellence, verbally and in writing.
Obvious knowledge of and experience with current and emerging technologies.
History of successfully planning tiered training opportunities and creating resources for users with various levels of technology skills and background.
Proven history and confidence as a facilitator of presentations, discussions, work groups, and projects.
Strong and documented skills managing time and projects, independently and as part of a team.
Ability to independently explore and propose new technologies, resources, and opportunities for consideration.
Ability to independently represent CMU OIT on a variety of university-wide project teams and workgroups.
Technology Trainer Level III:
Meets or exceeds all requirements of Technology Trainer II and;
11 years of documented professional experience with increasing responsibility working in training or roles related to professional development, information technology, education, educational technology, training program design and development, technical writing, or a similar field.
Extensive and documented experience of successfully training and supporting users throughout the implementation of core and other useful technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Team-management and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in training, professional development, information technology, education, educational technology, training program design and development, technical writing, or a similar field.
Experience in higher education environment.
Experience with Microsoft 365 environment and software, Qualtrics Research Core, Cisco Webex, classroom mediation hardware, cybersecurity matters, TeamDynamix, SAP, cloud storage, cellular phone and other mobile device operating systems and apps, and Artificial Intelligence.
Certifications, badges, or other credentials in multiple software, hardware, or systems.
Multimedia skills clearly show that candidate can plan, record, edit, and produce asynchronous training content using Adobe Creative Cloud or similar software.
Proven ability to create, execute, and evaluate surveys about prior and potential future training opportunities.
Track record of establishing, maintaining, and growing relationships with vendors, peer institutions, and other related organizations to sensibly and responsibly infuse technology on an appropriate scale.
Experience writing, editing, and delivering communication to target audiences via a variety of mediums.
Experience organizing and representing an organization throughout recruiting, orientation, and onboarding endeavors.
Background in establishing, facilitating, and maintaining topic/interest-specific user communities.
Experience establishing train the trainer programs.
Ability to establish constructive, cooperative, and trusting working relationships with others.
Experience troubleshooting and resolving challenges experienced and/or identified by users when escalated through the Help Desk ticketing system.
History of collaborating with non-training staff to identify training needs and develop opportunities as necessary and appropriate.
Experience researching, proposing, and coordinating pilot user groups for potential large-scale implementation.
Ability to apply knowledge to achieve successful organizational outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities
Technology Trainer Level I
Acquires proficiency in a variety of technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Maintains reliable training registration and participant tracking system and processes and provides reports to leadership on a regular basis.
Proposes, prepares, promotes, and facilitates recurring schedule of in-person and virtual instructor-led training opportunities for a variety of technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Assists with awareness efforts related to technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Creates and maintains support documentation and tutorials in written and multimedia formats.
Identifies and vets external training resources and opportunities for end users.
Responds to end user requests for training.
Assists with maintaining OIT’s web and social media presence.
Regularly uses mediated classroom and presentation technologies.
Writes and proposes training session titles and descriptions.
Participates in ongoing professional development related to organization goals.
Assists with recruiting, orientation, and onboarding activities within and on behalf of OIT.
Serve as back-up to OIT Communications manager.
Technology Trainer Level II
Performs all duties and responsibilities of Technology Trainer I, and;
Maintains proficient knowledge and skills about a variety of technologies (hardware, software, and systems) and continuously develops knowledge of new topics.
Leads awareness efforts related to technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Supports efforts related to education of university faculty, staff, and students regarding technology policies and regulations.
Identifies, vets, and regularly communicates with existing and potential technology vendors about training availability and opportunities.
Provides advanced training to end users with more complex needs.
Independently maintains OIT’s web and social presence with input and approvals from OIT leadership.
Collaborate with colleagues on a variety of university-wide project teams and workgroups with guidance from higher level staff.
Improves and maintains processes for evaluating training efforts and provides reports to leadership on a regular basis.
Research and proposes potential internal and external training opportunities, systems, and collaborations for implementation within the university community.
Coordinates and facilitates user groups related to technologies (hardware, software, and systems) and interests of end users.
Coordinates and facilitates recruiting, orientation, and onboarding activities within and on behalf of OIT.
Leads efforts to establish, facilitate, and maintain topic/interest user communities.
Maintains train the trainer programs for a variety of core and other useful technologies (hardware, software, and systems).
Technology Trainer Level III
Performs all duties and responsibilities of Technology Trainer II, and;
Consults throughout the process of identifying, vetting, selecting, and implementing training for new technologies used throughout the university community.
Leads efforts related to education of university faculty, staff, and students regarding technology policies and regulations.
Develops, shares, and presents technology training-related data reports to leadership and university community.
Creates, executes, and evaluates survey data related to current and potential training related endeavors.
Maintains ongoing relationships with existing vendors and establishes new relationships with potential.
Oversees extensive repository of self-paced training and support documentation.
Partners with other departments regarding the development and delivery of training.
