Purpose and Goal:
The Secondary Curriculum & Instructional Specialist leads and supports curriculum development and instructional programs in all secondary schools.
- This role involves working directly with secondary school administrators, curriculum and instructional staff, federal programs staff, and special populations staff serving students in grades 6-12.
- The Secondary Curriculum & Instructional Specialist provides administrative and strategic leadership for the system’s school improvement priorities, collaborating closely with district executive staff and school-based staff. They ensure professional development and coaching for instructional faculty align with system priorities and strategic plans, promoting high-quality, culturally relevant instruction in a warm, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment.
- Additionally, the Secondary Curriculum & Instructional Specialist serves as a support person for secondary principals and other administrators, guiding them to advance secondary education improvement efforts and achieve Board and district goals.
- The focus is on closing achievement and opportunity gaps, progress, content mastery, readiness, and graduation rate for traditionally underserved students, ensuring equity in secondary services, and fostering diversity in leadership positions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties of this position are noted below. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assists in evaluating and continuously improving the effectiveness of instruction at all secondary schools by implementing
the system’s strategic plan. - Aligns local, state, and federal budgets to the district’s strategic curriculum/instructional priorities.
- Builds the capacity for instructional leadership in the school leaders of the district through professional development and curriculum and instructional leadership development.
- Remains current on Georgia Department of Education policies/processes and relevant legislation that impacts curriculum and instruction.
- Directs and coordinates the planning, implementation, and evaluation of 6-12 programs.
- Assists the principals in planning and administering a cohesive instructional program, supporting teacher growth and improvement, and resolving school-related issues.
- Works collaboratively with the secondary principals to ensure an articulated and coordinated curriculum between and among the secondary schools.
- Works collaboratively with the other instructional staff to ensure vertical articulation of curriculum.
- Develops annual goals and objectives with the secondary principals for each school and facilitates the creation of School Improvement Plans.
- Supports building principals in the development of school-wide plans to increase student achievement.
- Develops specific recommendations, in collaboration with secondary principals, to improve student achievement, especially for those students with identified performance risks.
- Investigates, pursues, and administers grants to support the curriculum and instructional services throughout the system.
- Design processes for collaborating and partnering between the school system, state and local agencies, and the community.
- Performs other duties as necessary or requested to improve or enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of programs, operations, and processes in the system.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

A minimum of a Master’s degree in school leadership, education, or a related field.

Demonstrated professional experience in a leadership role.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Successful experience as a classroom teacher and/or leadership.

Broad knowledge of curriculum development, secondary instructional best practices, supervision and evaluation, and issues related to secondary education.

System-level leadership and management experience overseeing academic programs resulting in significant improvement with examples of the following:

Deep understanding of project planning, curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development, data inquiry, and instructional technologies.

Effective budget planning and management.

Proven track record of achieving short- and long-term organizational objectives and academic results through the development and implementation of academic systems.

Coaching and supporting teachers and school leadership teams.

Experienced strategist and innovator who will contribute to the leadership, management, and growth of cross-functional teams and adult learners across the organization.

Highly accountable and results-driven with the ability to set and use goals to guide action and objectively measure performance.

Outstanding communication and organizational skills with experience in Google Suite.

Communication Skills: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret information relevant to the position, including being able to speak effectively to small and large groups of people, and to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
