What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Teacher-Elementary School position at Central Queens Academy Charter School?
Associate Teacher-Elementary School
WHO WE ARE
Central Queens Academy (CQA) is an award-winning, high-performing, free, public charter school which opened in 2012. Currently we serve approximately 400 middle school scholars in grades 5-8 and 300 elementary school scholars in K-2nd grade. We will grow our elementary school and add one new grade each year until 2024 when we will serve all grades K-8. CQA was founded to serve the families in District 24, specifically those who live in and around the multiethnic, multicultural, and multilingual communities of Elmhurst, Corona and Woodside. Our scholars and their families hail from over 30 different nations and speak over 20 different languages at home. More than 80% of our scholars would be the first in their families to attend college.
OUR MISSION
The mission of Central Queens Academy Charter School is to prepare students for success in education, the workforce and the community through a school that integrates literacy, standards-based academics and culturally responsive supportive services.
WHAT WE ASK OF OUR TEACHERS
- Teach – Drive student mastery of core and character standards through excellent teaching practices
- Innovate – Willing to take risks and think creatively to support all scholars
- Collaborate – Support efforts to institutionalize effective team practice and build a strong foundation
- Grow – Engage in continual learning and reflective practices to build your skills and career
POSITION OVERVIEW
We generally see the Associate Teacher role as being a 2-year position with continually growing independent opportunities which will ultimately lead to a lead teacher position. We have elevated all of our previous AT's to lead teaching roles and are looking to replenish our pipeline. The CQA Associate Teacher track actively builds the skills of emerging teachers under the direct guidance and support of a team of veteran educators in a number of ways:
- Associate Teachers are paired with a veteran teacher to learn from while also supporting their class.
- Associate Teachers serve as our in-house substitute teacher, thereby giving them experience in multiple grades and multiple disciplines.
- Associate Teachers are given small groups of intervention scholars to support in reading and math development.
- Associate Teachers are often given an Enrichment course of their choosing to teach on their own.
- Associate Teachers may be given a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) class to run on their own.
