What are the responsibilities and job description for the Child Care Navigator position at Central Virginia Community College?
Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs.
The Child Care Navigator will lead the implementation of CVCC’s commitment to ensuring students, faculty and staff have access to high quality early childhood education within the CVCC service delivery area. The Child Care Navigator will report to the Community Connections Coordinator and work in the Student Services division of CVCC.
- Outreach to the licensed and religiously exempt providers in the CVCC service delivery area to understand their enrollment availability.
- Work in support of CVCC in community collaborative efforts that focus on childcare access and quality.
- Understand and track availability broken down by age group, hours and days of care — and whether the program operates year-round.
- Identify which providers accept public funding for child care.
- Establish a mechanism (database) by which the providers can update program changes and availability.
- Become well versed in all the public supports available to families.
- Provide individualized support to students, faculty and staff in their search for child care.
- Proactively identify and reach out to students in need of child care. Pell Grant recipients and single parents will be prioritized.
- Support students, faculty and staff in navigating public childcare financial assistance programs including Virginia Child Care Subsidy, Virginia Preschool Initiative, Head Start and Early Head Start, Early Childhood Special Education, Virginia Mixed Delivery and Military Child Care Assistance through Child Care Aware of America.
- Document and track all relevant data for program evaluation
- Other duties assigned by the Community Connections Coordinator
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Significant knowledge and understanding of the system of childcare in Virginia, including public financing models and provider networks.
- Education in early childhood education, early childhood policy, public administration or a closely related field.
- Clear, proactive oral and written communications skills.
- Track record in working with multiple constituencies simultaneously.
- Familiar with the design and use of data systems to manage programs and track accountability.
- Clear, proactive oral and written communicator
- Experience in childcare resource and referral roles.
- Fluency in multiple languages is welcomed.
