About Us Centralia College is located on a 30-acre campus in the heart of Centralia, Washington and has been serving students in the Lewis County region since 1925. As a comprehensive community college, Centralia College offers academic transfer and workforce programs, as well as adult basic education, ELL, and personal enrichment classes. The college also offers five Bachelor of Applied Science degrees: Information Technology - Application Development, Diesel Technology, Applied Management (Business), Behavioral Healthcare and Teacher Education. In addition to the main campus in Centralia, Centralia College East in Morton is a smaller site that serves the needs of students in east Lewis County. Since the college is committed to the success of all students, Centralia College also provides educational programs at two corrections centers in southwest Washington - Garrett Heyns Education Center located in Shelton, Washington and the Cedar Creek Corrections Center located in Littlerock, Washington. Job Description Centralia College is accepting applications to develop an applicant pool of qualified candidates for part-time, non-permanent sign language interpreter positions. This recruitment will remain open to develop a qualified candidate pool. Under the direction of the Disability Services Office Interpreters facilitate communication between the Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing consumers. Interpreters use American Sign Language (ASL), signed English, transliterating and/or other manual sign systems to provide interpreting services in a wide variety of settings including classrooms and related activities; college events; and employee/applicant activities. Interpreters must be able to adjust to a range of consumer needs and preferences and work comfortably with a wide spectrum of linguistic, cognitive and technical skills. ASL interpreters must be able to convey accurately the register, tone, intent and content of all communication participants. Centralia College is recruiting for American Sign Language Interpreters for all campuses. This position will require a flexible schedule and availability for any situation requiring communication between hearing and hearing impaired persons. Duties and Responsibilities Interpret and translate classroom and related activities; college events; and employee/applicant activities Facilitate communication between deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students, faculty, staff and the public Accurately convey the meaning and spirit of all parties involved Match the language skills/needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing participants Abide by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct, Centralia College policies, and applicable state and federal laws Observe and team with other interpreters Respond to situations and concerns in a culturally competent manner Prepare for assignments and request materials needed to provide quality service Provide referrals to appropriate college and/or community resources Complete Time and Leave Reporting documents in a timely manner Maintain records related to work completed as applicable. Qualifications Two years of college level course work required. Two years experience in interpreting for the hearing impaired. National Interpreter Certification (NIC, NAD) Physical Requirements Because this position interprets in a variety of educational settings, the employee may be exposed to different working conditions. Frequent repetitive hand and wrist motions. Frequent need for oral and auditory communications. Occasionally kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach. Conditions of Employment Hourly employees who qualify (work 350 hours in 12 consecutive months) are represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
