Lead Developer, Enterprise Business Systems

Overview: Work with the current Manager of Enterprise Business Systems, other IT personnel, and stakeholders to develop IBM iSeries based technical solutions to business issues. Additionally, collaborate within IT to develop and execute a leadership transition plan and succession roadmap with measurable milestones, during which the candidate will shadow the incumbent manger, learn from other IT resources, document existing institutional knowledge, and gradually assume technical and managerial responsibilities of increasing importance and impact to ensure effective knowledge transfer and operational continuity.


Organizational Impact:
Will work across the organization to interface with users and determine needs related to iSeries platforms. Works within IT to develop code, maintain code repositories, and test software to ensure functionality and update program(s) to include security measures, data capacity, and quality deployments. Will be involved in relevant software build or buy decisions.


During the transition period, technical assignments include the design, creation, modification /configuration, testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and documentation of high-quality, innovative, and fully performing software that complies with coding standards, technical designs, and that meets user needs following the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). Additional duties will include project management, team leadership, and other rotating functional and administrative assignments.

Knowledge & Experience:

University degree preferred. However, equivalent relevant experience such as 7 years of prior IBM iSeries development, including 3 years in a manufacturing environment will be accepted.

Experience in mentoring teams and leading projects of significant technical complexity. PMP certification is helpful.

Expertise in integrating iSeries data and applications with other platforms, such as warehouse management systems and data warehouse platforms.


Essential Functions | Accountabilities | Performance Measures

  • Work with the Manager of Enterprise Business Systems and other IT resources to plan and execute a phased transition plan, assuming full managerial technical duties within an agreed upon timeline.
  • Work with the Manager of Enterprise Business Systems and other members of the IT Department to document critical workflows, system configurations, data flows, and vendor relationships to institutionalize existing knowledge and approaches.
  • Design, develop, test, maintain, and support in-house line of business applications, built on an IBM iSeries platform using RPG, SQL, Lansa, Go Anywhere, or similar tools.
  • Perform systems analysis needed to ensure optimal application operation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and IT Department personnel to troubleshoot system and application issues.
  • Manage medium scale projects while supporting the day-to-day activities of the business.
  • Consult closely with IT Department leadership and stakeholders regarding projects, milestones & tasks.
  • Work with others to design in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for new and modified systems.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems
  • Develop work instructions, procedures, system documentation, and coding standards as needed.
  • Stay current on related technologies, best practice work methods and make suggestions for improvement as warranted.
  • Provide after-hours support as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Solutions are developed by collaborating with others, drawing from prior experiences, researching best practices, and other methods. Has responsibility for making changes or enhancements in systems and processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness of area.


Leadership & Talent Management:
Will gradually assume technical, managerial, and leadership responsibilities of increasing importance and impact to ensure operational continuity. May provide guidance and assistance to other professionals and/or support employees.


Core Competencies:

  • At least 5 years of proven experience with RPG (IV, ILE, Free Form), CL, SQL, iSeries admin tasks, and DB2 database functionality.
  • Strong SQL skills including embedded SQL. Must be comfortable with creating and working with advanced SQL statements - e.g., GROUP BY, HAVING, OUTER JOINS, etc.
  • Knowledge of enterprise system functions (e.g. Distribution, Inventory, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Order Entry/Invoicing, PO Entry/Stock Receiving, General Ledger)
  • Familiarity with the following platforms or technologies: Turnover, EDI, Socket programming, API’s, XML, JAVA, Lansa / RDML, BRMS Backup and Recovery, WPF, C#.
  • Ability to understand business unit objectives and how technology can be leveraged to help achieve them.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite Software and other related technologies.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with all levels of work colleagues, management, and external parties.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, as well as excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize, execute tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours when necessary.


Travel Required:
Occasional travel to local training events or in support of projects and corporate initiatives.
