The DHS Childcare Provider position is part time, approximately 5 hours per week. The position requires a creative, compassionate, personable, motivated, and organized individual capable of assisting in a variety of program activities. Desirable skills include an ability to work with parents and care for young children, awareness of child development and developmentally appropriate activities, effective verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work with diverse populations. This position will connect with youth and families, and internal staff. Reports to FYI Supervisor, or the on-duty Supervisor of the program the position is supporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Maintain the philosophy, integrity, and confidentiality of Chaffee County’s Department of Human Services.
- Provide childcare and supervise play for children participating in DHS programs.
- May plan activities, direct children, change diapers, assist with bathroom duties, maintain a safe and sanitary environment for children.
- Engage in activities with children including singing, dancing, puppet dialogue, reading, playing outdoor games, etc.
- Communicate effectively with team and/or parents regarding children’s behavior, any observed issues as well as positive growth and development.
- Utilize nurturing parenting program tools for interaction with children.
- Refer all family issues to acting DHS full time staff on location.
- Provide necessary documentation of activities and hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to clearly speak and understand the English language.
- Bi-lingual capability in Spanish is a plus.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to interact with the public in a professional and positive manner.
- Ability to recognize and meet children’s needs such as thirst, hunger, diaper change, etc.
- Ability to problem solve dilemmas between children.
- Ability to use non-violent, nurturing techniques to redirect children with challenging behavior.
- Ability to communicate with parents any specific needs or support that would help make the childcare experience more positive for both the child and the staff.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- General understanding of child development.
- 2 years of experience providing childcare and working with children ages 0-6.
- Knowledge of disabilities and to work with children with special needs preferred.
- Able to drive a motor vehicle is desirable. Clean motor vehicle required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Stands 70% of the time, sits 10% of the time.
- Ascends or descends ladders, stairs, ramps, poles using feet and legs, hands and arms.
- Maintains body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching or running on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
- Bend body downward and forward from the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Bends legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
- Reach, extending hands and arms in various directions.
- May lift up negligible of weight up to 10 pounds, up to 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently, up to 20 to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Dexterity ability to handle, seize, hold, grasp, turn hands and to use fingers to pick up, pinch items.
- Vision ability to see closely and clearly at 20 inches or less, distance clearly at 20 feet or more, able to identify and distinguish colors, and peripheral vision.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Toys, games, and age-appropriate activities while watching children. On occasion, may need to operate kitchen equipment such as oven, stove, sink or dishwasher.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position may work in a variety of conditions indoors and various weather outdoors. May be exposed to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes or skin. Possible risk of bodily injury from classroom activities, transportation accidents, moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools or machinery.
