Chaffee County Road and Bridge is accepting applications for a full time Operator I to work in Salida and Buena Vista, Colorado to build and maintain the County's roads and bridges. Must have a high school diploma or GED, valid Colorado CDL, Class B license and 1 year of experience driving a truck. Career progression opportunity to advance to Operator II. Work schedule is Monday - Thursday, 10 hours per day. Possible overtime as needed. Requires CDOT drug screen and post offer, pre-employment occupational testing. Must register with FMCSA Clearinghouse.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Operates trucks and other light and heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of County roads and bridges. This position has the opportunity to progress to the Operator II position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates light equipment such as a broom, roller, and tandem axle dump truck with snowplow in performance of duties.
  • Performs manual labor duties requiring the use of hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, axes, saws, power drills, post-hole diggers, and jack hammers, not inclusive.
  • Performs preparation and patching of damaged roadway areas with asphalt including shoveling, raking, and tamping of asphalt.
  • Controls traffic work site by flagging and/or placing barricades.
  • Hauls materials (gravel, asphalt, concrete, chips, etc.) in tandem axle dump truck.
  • Checks and maintains proper fluid levels and air pressure of equipment and performs minor maintenance as necessary. Performs CDL pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Performs routine service and maintenance as required.
  • May assist in forming and finishing concrete.
  • Maintains culverts.
  • Removes snow from streets and other public thoroughfares; spreads salt or sand onto the roadway with tandem axle truck.
  • Operates grader and other heavy equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains cleanliness of maintenance facilities, performs custodial functions for Department as necessary.
  • Understands policy concerning and work done in Right-of-Way and the “Call Before You Dig” policy of utility easements.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Performs other duties as required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to read and understand written materials.
  • Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment. Includes patch truck, patch roller, broom, tandem axle dump truck, backhoe, grader, loader, hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, saws, power drills, post hole diggers, and jack hammers.
  • Ability to apply problem/solving skills in developing solutions for unanticipated issues and challenges.
  • Ability to work with other people taking into consideration their needs, their personal styles, and the requirements of their jobs.
  • Ability to work individually, as well as with a team, to fulfill county department goals and projects.

MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Colorado CDL Class B operators license
  • First aid and CPR certificates
  • Flagging and traffic control certification
  • Air brakes certified
  • MSHA certification
  • Working knowledge of truck driving and light and heavy equipment operation
  • 1 years of work experience in the same or similar position

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to conduct activities involving extensive sitting in vehicles or equipment, and moderate walking and standing.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull burdens weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate equipment, tools and other similar tools and materials.
  • Ability to conduct activities involving stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, climbing, twisting and reaching on a daily basis.
  • Ability to distinguish small objects at near and far distances in conditions of bright or low light; ability to distinguish depth, and see objects in a wide field of vision; ability to distinguish objects and depths in snowy conditions.
  • Ability to work in areas of extreme equipment noise.
  • Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone or two-way radio and distinguish telephone equipment signals, two-way radios, and other auditory tones.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The majority of this position's duties are performed both inside and outside a protected environment. The employee may experience seasonal exposure to elements such as extreme heat, cold, humidity or wetness. The employee may be frequently exposed to various hazards including loud noise, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes, odors, dust, chemicals and poor ventilation on a daily basis.
