ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A valid Alabama teaching certificate in the field of school administration.
- A master’s degree or higher with a major in educational administration.
- Three (3) years successful experience as a classroom teacher at the appropriate level.
- Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
- Must meet criteria for evaluating teachers and current staff.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SUPERVISED BY: Principal
SUPERVISES: Classified and certified school personnel as designated.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Comprehensive knowledge of principals and practices of modern education and ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
- Ability to plan and organize effectively.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
- Ability to use computers and other technology to perform communication, data management, reporting, instructional supervision and other responsibilities efficiently.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the law as pertaining to schools.
- Knowledge of various evaluation tools.
- Knowledge of state and local policies and procedures.
- Skills in recruitment, selection, induction and assignment of personnel.
- Skills in maintaining effective discipline.
- Ability to plan and conduct faculty meetings.
- Ability to evaluate staff effectively.
- Ability to manage fiscal resources.
- Physical mobility, dexterity, strength and visual acuity to meet student needs, deal with student problems and assist with building maintenance problems and school ground monitoring activities.
JOB GOAL:
To serve as an instructional and administrative leader of the school, to work with staff, students and community to ensure a high quality educational program, and to formulate and accomplish the school mission.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists in providing effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the instructional program.
- Assists in interpreting and enforcing local, state and federal policies, regulations and laws.
- Assists the principal in the personnel function (recruitment, orientation, training, supervision, evaluation, mentoring, etc.)
- Assists the principal in securing, maintaining and managing material resources.
- Assists in improving student attendance.
- Assists with scheduling and assigning students for instruction.
- Assists with extracurricular activities at the level assigned.
- Assists with the supervision of classroom instruction.
- Assists with the distribution and accounting of textbooks and instructional supplies.
- Assists with curriculum development and other related matters.
- Prepares such reports as assigned.
- Assists with inspection of the physical plant and grounds and reports maintenance/custodial needs.
- Attends meetings, trainings, seminars, and workshops as required.
- Attends and assists with supervision of school system activities, events, ceremonies, and conferences as needed.
- Assists with procedures related to the health and safety of staff and students.
- Assumes overall responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
- Is on call when necessary to provide proper building security and building maintenance, and to handle emergency situations.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
- Models and maintains high ethical standards.
- Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
- Maintains expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
- Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
- Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
- Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
- Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
- Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and length of contract to be determined by the Board’s salary schedule.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
