Title: Senior Researcher (post-doctoral)

This position reports to the Principal Investigator of the funding grants and research laboratory (Dr. Helen Turner). This position will be required to submit weekly verbal and written reports as requested by the supervisor. Since this is a grant funded position with duties associated with Federal funding, day to day supervision will be the grant Principal Investigator.
- Position Summary
Performs scientific research leading to the publication of peer-reviewed papers on topics aligned with the research interests of NSM faculty. Supports advanced technical capabilities in SNSM research and teaching laboratories including physiology and high-resolution microscopy. Mentors undergraduates in internships and capstone research courses. Position is grant funded and dependent on continued receipt of extramural funding by supervisor.
- Duties and Responsibilities (100% of work time)
- Performs skilled laboratory procedures, tests and analyses to address research goals.
- Provides project leadership and technical and intellectual support to Principal Investigator.
- Independently and collaboratively trains and mentors undergraduate students including offering training and credentials in advanced instrumentation and supervision of undergraduate research experiences.
- Analyzes data and writes research progress reports on request including summarizing experimental results.
- Engages in the preparation and writing of papers for publication, as well as conference posters and presentations, including co-authoring with undergraduates.
- Contributes data and administrative support towards the submission of extramural funding applications.
- Coordinates and/or conducts library and computer searches for research data, some of which may include specialized archival research; modifies, adapts or varies standard procedures to meet the needs of the project.
- Employs advanced analytic techniques using statistical and computational techniques to assess large data sets.
- Operates and maintains laboratory and experimental equipment including but not limited to advanced electrophoresis, spectrometry, microscopy, centrifuges, analytical balances, and cell culture apparatus.
- Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University.
- Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Qualifications
Minimum Education
Required: Minimum of a Ph.D. degree in Biology or a related field is required.
Minimum Experience
- At least 5 years postdoctoral research with a track record of publications in the field of physiology and pharmacology.
- Interest and track record in support of diversity and equity efforts relating to STEM careers for minority students.
Minimum Skills:
Computer skills must include Microsoft Office, Excel and familiarity with search engines such as NCBI and PubMed. Competence in common statistical analyses and experience in preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals is required. Laboratory skills must include molecular biology and basic protein biochemistry, electrophysiology, pharmacology and confocal/fluorescence microscopy.
- Physical Requirements
Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.
- Other Requirements:
- Depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
