Summary
The Lifeguard is responsible for providing safety to all patrons and enforcement of policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation at Sholem Aquatic Center or any other Champaign Park District aquatics facility.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 15 years of age with a valid work permit.
- Must have current Ellis & Associate Lifeguard Certification (can be obtained through the Park District prior to hiring)
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public and staff and work cooperatively and harmoniously with people in an enthusiastic manner
- Knowledge of principles and practices of pool rules, policies, and procedures
Supervision
The Lifeguard reports directly to the Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager.
Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District
- Mandated reporter training
- Harassment prevention training
- Bloodborne pathogen training
- Facility training
- Maintain Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Certification
Classification
- Non-exempt, hourly
- Seasonal (not to exceed six (6) months)
- Season is May to September
Essential Functions
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Execute water emergency procedures promptly and effectively.
- Regularly scan the water area at Sholem Aquatic Center and its surroundings to ensure patrons' safety in adherence to Ellis Standards.
- Possess 20/30 vision or corrected vision with prescription sunglasses or contact lenses.
- Perform daily maintenance tasks to uphold the facility's standards.
- Attend scheduled in-services as required.
- Enforce and adhere to Champaign Park District policies and procedures
- Check all equipment and supplies and report any repairs or needs to the Pool Manager immediately
- Enforce and adhere to Champaign Park District policies and procedures diligently.
- Inspect all equipment and supplies, promptly reporting any repairs or needs to the Pool Manager.
- Enforce rules consistently and professionally with patrons.
- Wear the assigned Champaign Park District staff uniform during all working hours.
- Handle first aid and/or water emergency situations with competence.
- Clean the facility as necessary throughout the day, including trash pick-up and locker room maintenance.
- Provide assistance during special events, contributing to their smooth execution.

Physical Considerations
- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs, and movement of your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials
- Lifeguards need sufficient strength and endurance to perform water rescues and assist patrons in and out of the water.
- Lifeguards must have the physical ability to respond quickly, moving from a resting state to immediate action during emergencies.
- May be exposed to pool chemicals and cleaning products
- Good eyesight, at least 20/30 vision or corrected vision with prescription sunglasses or contact lenses, is crucial for vigilant water area surveillance.
Environmental Considerations
- Lifeguards must be prepared for prolonged periods of constant surveillance, maintaining vigilance to ensure the safety of all patrons.
- Lifeguards may work outdoors and need to adapt to various weather conditions, including exposure to sunlight and fluctuations in temperature.
- Must be able to work in a variety of air temperatures and changing weather conditions.
