JOB TITLE:                   BUS DRIVER TRAINER

REPORTS TO:              DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION

SALARY:                     SUPPORT HOURLY - GRADE 113

Job Goal:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Bus Driver Instructor will organize, conduct, and oversee the classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, and ongoing safety training for school bus drivers, ensuring compliance with Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) regulations and best practices. 

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent. 
• Valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger (S) and school bus (P) endorsements. 
• Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) School Bus Driver Certification. 
• Successful completion of AZDPS School Bus Driver Instructor training and certification. 
• Minimum of two years of experience as a school bus driver. 
• Experience as a school bus driver trainer preferred. 
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and instructional skills. 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
• Ability to maintain a safe and professional driving record. 
• Must pass a background check and drug screening and obtain an Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card. 

Core Job Functions:

• Develop and deliver comprehensive classroom instruction on safe driving practices, Arizona traffic laws, school bus regulations, and emergency procedures. 
• Conduct behind-the-wheel training for new and experienced drivers, focusing on safe operation of school buses, route navigation, and passenger management. 
• Provide ongoing training and refresher courses to maintain driver skills and knowledge. 
• Evaluate driver performance and provide constructive feedback to improve skills and safety. 
• Maintain accurate records of training sessions, evaluations, and driver certifications. 
• Ensure compliance with all Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) regulations and standards for school bus drivers and transportation. 
• Stay current with changes in laws, regulations, and best practices for school bus transportation. 
• Promote a culture of safety and responsibility among school bus drivers. 
• Conduct pre-trip inspections of school buses to ensure safe operating conditions. 
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

Physical Requirements –

Positions in this classification typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, sitting, finger or manual dexterity, repetitive finger motion, speaking, hearing, seeing (with correction), focusing ability, or other factors applicable for the job. Employees must be able to stand and walk constantly on various floor surfaces while performing various duties, including but not limited to using push/pull force of up to 50 pounds for various machines. Employees may be subject to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, and loud noises. Employees may be required to lift or exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects frequently. Employees may be required to climb ladders to perform various cleaning or maintenance tasks.
