JOB TITLE: PRINCIPAL
REPORTS TO: SUPERINTENDENCY
Job Goal
The Principal is the administrative and instructional leader of the school. He/She assumes full responsibility for all aspects of the site including implementation of the instructional program, facilities operation and maintenance, school/community relations, business affairs of the school as they relate to the overall mission of the district and the school, and the utilization and development of staff and faculty. In doing so, he/she makes the most efficient utilization of resources available in providing the maximum instructional benefit to all students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master Degree and Administrative Coursework in Education Related Field
- Appropriate Arizona administrative certification
- Demonstrated classroom teaching ability: minimum three years teaching experience preferred
- Knowledge of standards and researched-based instruction
- Successful administrative experience
Core Job Functions
District Responsibilities
- Develop regulations, procedures and plans which reflect Board policy and provide maximum efficiency to support the educational program.
- Serve as a member of the Superintendent’s general administrative team.
- Serve on and chair committees at the discretion of the Superintendent.
- Attend official district functions as the Superintendent may direct.
- Keep the central offices informed of all events/activities of an unusual nature as well as the routine matters related to the Superintendent’s accountability for school affairs.
- Respond to all correspondence in a timely manner and prepare and disseminate reports required by the Superintendent.
- Perform in other areas of responsibility as assigned by the Superintendent.
Leadership
- Promote positive action toward the realization of school goals through efficient procedures, academic and extra curricular programs, and active engagement of staff, students, parents, and community.
- Develop a strong sense of community through effective communication and participation in order to foster positive human relations and high morale.
- Recognize and promote exceptional efforts of the staff and student body.
- Interpret, implement and enforce board policy and administrative regulations.
- Supervise in compliance with District policies all staff for which he/she has responsibility.
- Effectively communicate to staff to keep them informed of policy changes, new programs, areas for improvement and recognition of exceptional performance.
- Develop and disseminate the calendar of events for the operation and maintenance of the school.
- Direct the activities of support staff personnel assigned to the school.
Personnel
- Establish and maintain a personnel program in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and district personnel policies of recruitment, selection, utilization, development, and self-renewal which engenders curriculum, innovation, creativity and involvement.
- Participate with the Human Resources Administration, in conjunction with district personnel policies, in the selection of quality instructional faculty, including but not limited to:
- Recruitment efforts.
- Retention of current faculty and staff to the Superintendent.
- Hiring new personnel to fill vacancies.
- Maintain required formal evaluation procedures and timelines
- Develop an individual program of improvement for each member of his/her staff as needed, including but not limited to:
- Citation of areas which require improvement.
- A program of improvement individualized to encourage growth to maximum potential for each staff member.
- A follow-up program to assess progression toward cited individual goals.
Student Achievement
- Establish goals and high expectations for teaching and learning.
- Plan, coordinate and evaluate teaching and curriculum.
- Maintain a learning environment that encourages an appreciation of cultural and ethnic diversity.
- Facilitate the development of school-based curriculum in concert with district curriculum.
- Ensure the utilization of district-adopted curriculum materials to instruct students.
- Monitor supplemental instructional materials utilized in classrooms for appropriateness and educational value.
- Provide resources to support the classroom teacher in effective instruction.
- Keep abreast of current research and consider the implementation of innovative strategies and programs which will benefit students.
- Communicate with parents to inform them regarding curriculum issues and student progress.
- Supervise the school’s special education program ensuring compliance with district, state and federal regulations.
- Facilitate in the development of methods of evaluating student progress toward stated educational objectives.
- Utilize pertinent sources of information, e.g., surveys, test scores, etc. to determine the effectiveness of the instructional program and to lead staff in making changes when needed.
- Establish and maintain programs to support students who have not mastered state standards.
- Regularly review lesson plans and classroom activities to ensure appropriate use of instructional time.
Professional Development
- Promote and participate in teacher learning and development.
- Recommend and provide professional staff development programs aligned with student learning.
- Implement a viable system of performance assessment which effectively measures individual contribution to the overall mission of the school and provides for individual understanding, input, and continuous professional growth.
- Mutually identify professional goals for individual staff members that will support development of quality skills and traits.
Student Affairs
- Establish and maintain maximum visibility to and rapport with the student body.
- Establish, maintain, and monitor procedures designed to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
- Provide support and appropriate services to those students requiring special attention.
- Provide due-process procedures for those students where their performance warrants individualized special attention.
- Maintain an orderly climate which develops self-discipline in each student in the school.
- In grades 7-12, coordinate and direct a full range of co- and extra-curricular activities to supplement the academic instructional program.
- Assume responsibility for the proper attendance of all students.
- Establish and attend special events held to recognize student achievement.
Business
- Develop budget recommendations for maintenance and operations and capital outlay as the Superintendent may direct.
- Develop and maintain an effective program of cost reduction to insure budgetary compliance and the most efficient use of resource dollars.
- Create and implement procedures to inventory and secure all school district property.
- Uphold and honor all contractual agreements entered into by the district offices and recommend additional contractual requirements to the Superintendent.
- Monitor and approve expenditures of funds allocated to the school through the budget and other sources.
- Act as the prime custodian of all school funds.
- Approve and issue purchase order requisitions for material and services required.
Facilities
- Effectively utilize and maintain plant facilities in order to provide an appropriate learning environment and reasonable health and safety considerations for students and staff.
- Supervise the daily utilization of school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes.
- Insure that the facilities are open for operation of classes and activities as necessary.
- Recommend plant improvements to the Superintendent.
- Coordinate emergency plant problems with the district offices and appropriate agencies.
- Compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies.
School/Community Relations
- Coordinate support services external to the school (law enforcement, social services, etc.)
- Initiate and support an organization of parents to support all school programs.
- Maintain close contact and rapport with all interested parties, including students, staff, parents and the community concerning the operation of the school and instructional program.
- Develop and maintain a program of public relations which furthers awareness and understanding of school goals and insures community input, involvement and support.
