The Role :

CareerAbility at Chapel Haven Schleifer Center, Inc. was founded to meet a vital element of Chapel Haven’s mission : meaningful employment for the individuals we serve. As a key member of CareerAbility, the Career Development Manager works closely with the Director. The Career Deveopment Manager is responsible to inform, provide guidance, and assist in the development of the career advisement component of CareerAbility and its overall program and services. Frequently serving as the initial point of contact for CareerAbility, they recommend appropriate CareerAbility services and programs. The Career Development Manager upholds our principles of career exploration (Discovery) options, career training, pre-vocational opportunities, and finally job placement options that will give job seekers a future with the greatest balance of financial payoff and job satisfaction.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION :

  • Manages intake / referral process into CareerAbility. Monitors and evaluates career advisement protocols within CareerAbility and makes recommendations to Executive Director.
  • Manages the advisement (or career counseling) of individuals and entire caseload for CareerAbility by recommending personal and career development plans or necessary program modifications. Determines need for career exploration (Discovery), training, internships, and / or job placements by developing with the client a career pathway plan. Works with Career Development Advisor to create measurable goals, data collection on progress, and provides feedback and resources to help accomplish these plans.
  • Administers, conducts, and evaluates assessments. Offers continuous interpretation and evaluation of progress in an individual’s specific personal and career development plan, assigns career development advisor tasks, coordinates problem cases, and points out areas in which guidance and development techniques can be improved.
  • Uses considerable knowledge of diagnostic methods and their applicability to the ASD / DD population. Evaluates IEP’s and individualized plans, interprets medical and psychological data as well as reviews of other previous clinical or educational assessments for career / interest and aptitude assessments / inventories for career planning. Considers and evaluates education level, work history, personality, interests, and skills and suggests goals and careers that match an individual’s background, abilities, choice, and interest.
  • Oversees each personal career development plan and manages designated advisor to develop profiles, employment plans, job retention plans, and participates in Career Management Team meetings.
  • Carries a caseload. Works one-on-one with individuals or small groups, providing career guidance and advisement, as well as observations, assessments, or support throughout Discovery / Facilitated Discovery experiences and employment as needed.
  • Manages and maintains up to date documentation, progress notes, and records using SetWorks, as well as other systems of documentation. Contributes to, maintains, and updates CareerAbility databases. Ensures confidentiality and up-to-date maintenance of all client reports and records.
  • Provides supervision to Career Development Advisor(s) regarding performance and the personal and career development plans of assigned caseload. Performs supervisory duties over staff and administrative duties for department involving evaluations, progress reports, billing, emergencies, and enrollments / terminations.
  • Recommends supplies and resources needed for CareerAbility programs. Performs program development and supports the CareerAbility Strategic Plan. Assists with creating and contributing to CareerAbility curriculum, scheduling, programs, and training. Supports staff and client with identifying proper placement, on-boarding into placements, placement success, and placement retention strategies.
  • Attends team meetings. Maintains communication with CareerAbility, parents, and other CH staff and service providers as needed. This position has a high level of involvement leading meetings with families, the public, and other key stakeholders regarding their interest in CareerAbility services.
  • Reviews proposals and appropriate billing to families with Director’s approval. Supports billing processes as assigned.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field and a minimum of five years’ experience working with young adults or adults with developmental disabilities and / or autism spectrum disorders.
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Career Development Advisor Certificate from the National Career Development Association (NCDA) or similar may be accepted in lieu of a master’s degree. Must have experience in vocational development and assessment.
  • Must have experience administering standardized assessments, vocational / career development or transition services, data collection, and report writing. IEP and AAC knowledge are a plus but not required.
  • Experience within career counseling or workforce development is desirable.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with young adults or adults with developmental and social disabilities. Two years of teaching or leadership experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal presentation and written communication skills.
  • Valid CT driver’s license and use of personal vehicle and proof of insurance required.
