Chapman Elementary Library Assistant

Reports To:  Building Principal

Supervises:  Elementary school students in the library.

Classification:  Classified

FLSA Status:  Nonexempt

Terms of Employment:  Salary and work year as reviewed and established annually by the Board of Education.

Evaluation:  Performance of this position will be evaluated regularly in accordance with the Board’s policy.

Job Summary

The Library Assistant will assist Chapman Elementary in the full utilization of library services, materials and resources offered to USD 473 students and staff. 

Performance Responsibilities: 

• Manages circulation duties including checkout and check-in.

• Reads aloud and teaches lessons to each grade level.

• Assist as the ESOL Teacher's Aide weekly. 

• Manages and directs student library-aides.
• Implements discipline plan when appropriate in the library when library media specialist is gone.
• Assist students and staff with research, finding of books and other materials.
• Performs a variety of clerical and computer-related tasks as assigned.
• Responsible for shelving, straightening and shelf reading of library materials.
• Pull library materials, which need to be mended, discarded and/or replaced.
• Process new library materials received for circulation.
• Check-in and re-shelve returned materials.
• Maintain overdue notices and collects fines.
• Assist School Library Media Specialist with library schedules, promotional events (fundraiser book fair, etc.) and the annual inventory. 
• Leads classroom art/craft time.

• Strong organizational skills and a self-starter
• Knowledge and comfortable with using basic technology
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate with elementary aged students and staff
• Effectively supervise students in the library

Physical Demands  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk and hear.  The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. On occasion the employee may be required to work extended hours.
