Job Summary:
Charlevoix Public Schools is seeking an experienced, dedicated, and hands-on Maintenance Director to oversee the district’s maintenance and custodial operations. This position requires a dynamic individual who combines strong supervisory skills with a willingness to engage in day-to-day maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate will be responsible for leading the custodial and maintenance staff while ensuring all district facilities remain safe, clean, and well-maintained. The Maintenance Director will play a key role in long-term planning, budget management, and capital improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and supervise both maintenance and custodial staff to ensure that all district facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
- Develop, implement, and monitor work schedules for custodial and maintenance teams, ensuring timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Monitor staff performance, conduct performance reviews, and provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Create and manage a preventive maintenance program to minimize disruptions and reduce the need for costly emergency repairs.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards, district policies, and best practices in all maintenance and custodial activities.
- Hands-On Maintenance Duties:
- Perform routine and emergency repairs in key areas such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
- Address facility issues promptly, including managing both minor and larger, more complex repair projects.
- Stay informed on the latest technologies and systems to perform repairs efficiently, ensuring the district’s buildings and systems remain in optimal condition.
- Planning & Budgeting:
- Assist in the preparation and management of the annual maintenance budget, ensuring resources are effectively allocated.
- Make recommendations for capital improvements and long-term facility planning.
- Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for large-scale projects, ensuring quality control, timely delivery, and adherence to budgets.
- Regularly monitor the condition of district facilities, identifying areas for improvement or upgrades to extend the life of equipment and infrastructure.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for school administrators and staff regarding facility maintenance issues and concerns.
- Communicate effectively with custodial and maintenance staff, as well as external contractors, to ensure that all work is completed efficiently and according to established standards.
- Collaborate with the district leadership team to ensure maintenance needs align with the educational goals and school schedules.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience in facilities maintenance required.
- Proficiency in various building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) and maintenance tasks.
- Strong supervisory and team leadership abilities.
- Ability to use maintenance management software and technology for work scheduling, reporting, and tracking.
- Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in facilities maintenance.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, administration, and vendors.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing ladders, bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces.
- Comfortable working in varying environmental conditions, including indoor and outdoor settings.
