Charles County Government is seeking a dynamic Grounds Maintenance Technician to perform equipment operation in grounds maintenance work at County parks, golf courses and grounds areas. This position also involves seasonal grounds maintenance, athletic field maintenance, planting and landscaping, trash pickup and area cleanup work, and related tasks. The Grounds Maintenance Technician will operate gasoline and diesel-powered trucks and medium-sized equipment including dump trucks, tractors, loaders, forklifts, and equipment transport trailers.
Description of Career Ladder Series
Employees may progress though a career ladder with relevant experience, satisfactory performance appraisals and certain certifications. After three years of satisfactory conduct and performance as a Grounds Maintenance Technician as noted in the performance appraisal, combined with the completion of the County Leadership Academy, assigned MRPA trainings, or other identified professional certifications and with the written recommendation of the Parks Maintenance Superintendent, a Grounds Maintenance Technician may be recommended for promotion to a Senior Grounds Maintenance Technician. The written recommendation must describe the type and quality of work performed by the Grounds Maintenance Technician that demonstrates the employee is capable to work in an upper-level position. Concurrence of the written recommendation is required by the Chief of Parks and Grounds.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Six (6) months of grounds maintenance experience with two years’ experience operating medium to heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess a valid driver's license, Class "B" CDL preferred.
Special Requirements/Qualifications:
Subject to work beyond the normal scheduled hours of work.
Subject to call back in emergencies.
Must obtain a Class “B” CDL license within one year.
May serve in on-call duty on a rotational basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment including medium to heavy duty trucks, tractor trailers, equipment transporters, large capacity loaders, backhoes and power shovels, and equivalent types of equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, rules and regulations and safe driving practices.
- Knowledge of the use and care of hand and powered tools.
- Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to perform grounds maintenance work.
- Ability to use tools and equipment efficiently.
- Ability to follow specific instructions and procedures and refer nonstandard situations or problems to others.
- Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is regularly active with periods of heavy exertion. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 100 pounds; climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items; use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards; speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Principal duties of this job are performed in a shop or field environment with some work performed outside during inclement weather and in confined space areas.
