The Maintenance Specialist I assist in supervising part time positions for James Island County Park (JICP) facilities. Performs the efficient and effective maintenance and upkeep of all physical facilities and utilities, customer service, and risk management of JICP and CCPRC Headquarters (HQ). Supports park programs and special events including The Holiday Festival of Lights (HFOL) and other park activities as needed. Requires evening, weekend and holiday work, and “On call” status for emergency situations. On-site work

Specialized Duties and Responsibilities
Performs the upkeep of JICP, Campground and Cottages, Splash Zone Waterpark (SZ), and HQ rental facilities, buildings and equipment. Performs custodial duties for JICP, Campground and Cottages and SZ. Performs set-up/breakdown duties.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives and stocks inventory of supplies and materials. Assists in the set-up, break-down and nightly operations of the Holiday Festival of Lights. Ensures that all county park facilities maintain standards that protect the historical, cultural and natural resources.
  • Participates in the supervising and training of part time personnel as assigned.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service by responding to public inquiries, suggestions, complaints, and requests regarding the agency's facilities and services.
  • Participates in the strategic planning process. This includes identifying, evaluating, researching and providing input about Facility Repairs and Renovation Projects (FRRP), Park Maintenance and Repairs (PMR) and Capital Improvements projects for park facilities.
  • Follows all established procurement policies in the research, requisition, receipt and payment for equipment, materials and services.
  • Supports the training and development of maintenance personnel. This includes demonstrating the safe and proper use, storage, maintenance and inspections of equipment, tools, vehicles to ensure compliance with OSHA, DHEC, SC DNR, CCPRC and other regulatory bodies. Completes safety, training and inspection records and incident reports for the parks. Complies with the proper implementation of certain aspects of the agency Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Maintains affiliations with organizations in accordance of this position's duties.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and Work Experience Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED required and two years total experience preferred. Must pass a drug test and criminal background and motor vehicle driving record check, and shall possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • General experience in maintenance principles, and techniques, for facilities and grounds. General knowledge of park and facility operations.
  • General knowledge of safety regulations and personal protection equipment.
  • General knowledge of using common office technology hardware and software to perform job functions
  • General experience in actively listening and expressing ideas clearly and concisely, in oral and written form
  • General experience in recognizing, researching, analyzing and solving problems both independently and within teams
  • General experience in establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with fellow employees, and dealing courteously and firmly with the public.
  • General experience in providing outstanding customer service, internally and externally.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
This working position requires infrequently moving and remaining stationary in an office environment; frequently moving and remaining stationary in indoor park facilities; frequently moving and remaining stationary outdoors; frequently traversing outside terrain such as concrete, pavement, grass, dirt, mud, gravel, sand and aquatic environments; infrequently writing, reading, processing and moving documents; infrequently operating equipment such as computers, copiers, printers, and scanners; frequently operating power and hand tools and other motorized equipment; frequently communicating with staff and the public in person, online, and by phone; infrequently traveling to central and remote locations throughout Charleston County; frequently operating vehicles such as cars, trucks, golf carts, mowers and tractors; frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, precipitation, wind, sunlight and humidity; frequently moving, lifting, and transporting equipment and miscellaneous items weighing up to 50 pounds and to height of 5-6 feet.
