Position Overview:
The Director of Communications for the Charlotte Knights will lead all aspects of media relations, content creation, and strategic communications to enhance the team’s brand and public presence. This role is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies, managing media relationships, and overseeing game-day press box operations, including stat compilation and content distribution. The ideal candidate will be a strong storyteller with expertise in public relations, digital content, and crisis communications, ensuring consistent and engaging messaging across all platforms. Additionally, this position will manage a seasonal associate and press box staff, driving high-level communication initiatives that align with organizational goals.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
Position Overview:
The Director of Communications for the Charlotte Knights will lead all aspects of media relations, content creation, and strategic communications to enhance the team’s brand and public presence. This role is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies, managing media relationships, and overseeing game-day press box operations, including stat compilation and content distribution. The ideal candidate will be a strong storyteller with expertise in public relations, digital content, and crisis communications, ensuring consistent and engaging messaging across all platforms. Additionally, this position will manage a seasonal associate and press box staff, driving high-level communication initiatives that align with organizational goals.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Baseball Information
- Compile daily game notes for press box and media distribution
- Write nightly game recaps for official website, social media and media
- Create baseball content for website and social media, including player features, game highlights and more Write content for gameday program, media guide, & other club publications Compile and initiate press box management from lineups and make sure all materials are accessible to media on game days
- Compile stat packs for field staffs and media members
- Manage and arranges photos in folders for easy viewing
- Work all Charlotte Knights home games (75) and contribute to all road games (75)
- Content Creation & Management:
- Develop content for a range of channels, including press releases, media advisories, press conferences, social media, and the official Charlotte Knights website.
- Ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all communications materials.
- Media Relations
- Manage relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and industry influencers to secure coverage and shape public perception.
- Handle media inquiries and coordinate press events or interviews with Charlotte Knights staff and players.
- Lead crisis communication efforts when necessary, providing timely and effective responses to protect the company’s reputation.
- Strategic Communications Leadership:
- Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies that support organizational goals and enhance brand reputation.
- Lead the creation of high-level communications plans for major initiatives and successful product launches. Provide strategic plans to senior leadership on public relations, media interactions, and internal communications.
- Internal Communications:
- Develop and implement internal communication strategies that keep employees informed, engaged, and aligned with the company’s vision and goals.
- Brand Management & Storytelling:
- Ensure all communications align with the company’s brand voice, values, and strategic objectives.
- Drive compelling storytelling across all communications to strengthen brand presence and influence public perception.
- Be the voice of the team in all media outlets, including on-air TV appearances, radio and more.
- Staff Leadership
- Manage a seasonal associate to help the organization succeed in the communications department. Assign their roles and duties as determined based off their qualifications.
- Manage a team of press box employees with roles including, official team photographer, official scorer, field timing coordinator and scoreboard operator.
- Measurement & Reporting:
- Track and report on the effectiveness of communication initiatives, using analytics and feedback to adjust strategies as necessary.
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership on media coverage.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, with at least 2 years in a leadership or director-level position.
- Proven track record in developing and executing successful communications strategies across multiple channels (media, digital, internal).
- Strong media relations skills and experience handling high-profile public relations campaigns.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills.
- Experience in managing high-stakes situations.
- Expertise in brand management, content strategy, and storytelling.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a press box team, with a focus on collaboration and high performance.
- Proficiency in media analytics tools and reporting to measure the effectiveness of communications efforts.
- Proficiency in working with media to effectively tell the story of the organization.
- Ability to work under pressure for long hours at a time and adapt to rapidly changing environments.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
