What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Maintenance Officer position at Chatham, County of (NC)?
Performs protective service work processing inmates, maintaining corrections center security, transporting inmates, conducting daily maintenance and repairs throughout detention facilities, and performs related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Detention Supervisor.
Physical Requirements

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Must possess or obtain Detention Officer Certification within one year of employment.
Must pass a criminal record check, driving history, medical/psychological exam, and a pre-employment drug screen.
- Ensures the safety and security of inmates within the Chatham County Detention Center;
- Controls inmates by performing routine facility checks, conducting head counts, resolving conflicts, performing cell searches, and removing dangerous and unruly inmates as necessary;
- Receives and processes inmates into the custody of the institution, searches prisoners, takes charge of personal property, and assists in investigations of incidents within the Detention Center;
- Participates in daily shift briefings and maintains key and radio control;
- Distributes medications and meals, distributes and restocks supplies, and maintains accountability of razors;
- Prepares and maintains logs, reports and records, organizes files, answers telephone, contacts other agencies, and responds to inquiries;
- Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments and supervises inmate visitation;
- Prepares and distributes canteens to inmates;
- Performs general maintenance and cleaning of the Detention Center, ensures the Detention Center is in proper working order, and reports maintenance issues;
- May be assigned collateral officer duties such as special operations, community service, or assisting other teams of the Sheriff's Office;
- Assists with training new officers and attends training and meetings as required;
- Assists with setting up the kitchen and may assist with cooking of daily meals, stocking inventory, washing utensils, cleaning kitchen, etc.;
- Performs walkthroughs of jail weekly: Run generator, check the status of the sewage pump station, clean out sewage grinder, clean out inlet pipe of food interceptor, walk the roof (checking for faults on smoke fans, holes in the roof, unusual sounds from heat pumps and smoke fans), inspect the cleanliness and battery charge of floor scrubber, walk chases (looking for leaky pipes, bad light bulbs, condition of hot water heaters, faulty emergency lights, dirty smoke detectors and ducts, contraband), walk housing looking for leaks, bad bulbs, components that may have been tampered with, dirty vents and showers, ensure toilets and sinks operate, condition of the door and wall paint, walk admin and the rest of jail looking for leaks, bad bulbs, toilet and sink operation, condition of paint;
- Performs diagnostics and repairs: Includes working on security doors and sliders (electrical and mechanical sides of door), replacing flushometer kits, removing clogs from waste lines, changing shower and sink components, other plumbing, diagnosing issues and resolving them on washing machines, dryers, flat top grills, steamers, generators, sewage pump station, heat pumps, hot water heaters, electrical circuitry, security cameras, door intercoms, concrete work, painting, and power washing;
- Acts as a liaison for visiting contractors and vendors: Ensures a safe workplace for contractors and inmates during work time, that workspace is cleaned and secure during and after visits, and assists vendors with help where needed;
- Performs preventative maintenance: Check sinks and toilets are operational, clean HVAC units and change filters/belts, lubricate bearings and belts on smoke fans, lubricate mechanical parts of security doors latches and slider door racks, flush hot water heaters and replace (anodes, contactors, heating elements), replace faulty fire alarm components, clean carpets, clean bathrooms, power wash cellblock showers, power wash concrete outside, repair paint;
- Conducts inspections: Keep note of when inspections are due—state inspections, control panel inspections, fire alarm inspections, backflow inspections, sprinkler inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, annual system inspections, kitchen hood inspections, and efficiency inspections. Walk with the inspector and note issues that are found and assist with finding a solution;
- Performs administrative work: Keep inventory of parts and tools, request quotes for work that must be completed by outside resources, submit quotes to the proper department head, maintain records for purchases for reconciliation, assist administration staff with tasks, maintain stock in vehicle sallyport, assist with any maintenance based tasks for accreditation, assist with monthly fire drills, coordinate with other agencies/community partners to move forward with projects (e.g. Facilities, Electrical Utility, Water Department, Sheriff’s Office etc.);
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Some knowledge of the security, rules, regulations, and procedures of the institution;
- Some knowledge of the practices of modem penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint;
- Some knowledge of evacuation and fire policies and procedures;
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry;
- Ability to work independently on facilities' daily upkeep and repairs;
- Ability to work with contractors beyond the scope of onsite repairs;
- Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly;
- Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates;
- Ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems;
- Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately;
- Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates;

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates, attorneys, and the general public.
