What are the responsibilities and job description for the Speaker Services Specialist position at Cherokee Nation?
This position will provide a proactive service to the remaining First Language Cherokee Speaking population. This position will actively engage this population through community functions, home visits, phone visits, etc. to assess their needs to better advocate for them.
Job Duties:Design and implement strategic outreach to First Language Cherokee Speakers. Compiles and maintains statistical data on needs and outcomes to help identify any opportunity for the improvement of the Cherokee Speaking population. Fosters relationships with communities, organizations and departments to ensure services are being offered to the Cherokee Speaking population as culturally appropriate as possible. Assesses the needs of establishments that are highly frequented by Cherokee Speakers such as, but not limited to, Stomp Grounds and Cherokee Churches. Organizes staff and volunteers to meet the needs of the establishments. Provides services to help navigate agencies and other systems to enhance and/or ensure services for First Language Speakers. Provides training to agencies when needed or requested to better meet the needs of the Speaking population. Conducts phone and home visits to the Cherokee Speaking population to assess their needs and create preventive measures to negate future issues. Advocates for Cherokee Speakers when they interface with other systems and/or situations in which they may not understand or may be taken advantage. Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibility.
Qualifications:EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Associate's degree from a 2-year college or technical school; or two (2) years (60 credit hours) coursework from a 4-year college or university; or three (3) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
At least one (1) year of experience in a related field. Must have basic knowledge of the Cherokee Language.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should know Database software, Internet software, Inventory software, Order Processing systems, Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
Must meet and maintain periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
