PROBATION OFFICER
Department: Probation
FLSA Status: Exempt
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing probationary supervision to offenders sentenced in Cherokee County State and Magistrate Courts. This position requires attention to detail, communication, cooperation, decision making, dedication, and vision. This position works directly for the Probation Deputy Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitors caseloads of offenders; reviews offender information and case notes; reviews attendance records for classes; reviews monthly progress notes; addresses inconsistencies between program requirements and actual participation; and determines situations for program termination. * Reviews court records and court orders; determines obligations of offenders. * Conducts intake interviews. * Collects and records case intake data; obtains school records and family social history as needed. * Explains conditions of probation and related programs and the consequences of probation violation. * Performs drug screening when necessary. * Maintains regular communication with probationers and closes cases. * Schedules, prepares, and presents cases within mandated time limits. * Prepares and executes subpoenas, summonses, and other legal documents. * Provides testimony in court when necessary. * Conducts case-related research as needed, and makes recommendation for dispensation of cases. * Prepares warrants, petitions for revocation, orders, and other documents as required. * Identifies community resources designed to meet the needs of the probationer. * Manages and performs other court duties as required. * Informs attorneys, defendants, and general public on program requirements; receives and responds to questions, and inquiries regarding program information, and program requirements. * Speaks with victims and attorneys as cases require. * Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Associate’s degree from an educational institution recognized by S.A.C.S (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) or one (1) of the six (6) regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education OR four (4) years of law enforcement experience as a Certified Peace Officer.
Bachelor’s Degree, experience in probation or another related field, and Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred.
Special Qualifications: A valid State of Georgia Driver's License and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Knowledge of conceptions obtained by observation, investigation, interpretation, visualization, and mental creation. Data are intangible and include numbers, words, symbols, ideas, concepts, and oral verbalizations. Compiles, examines, or evaluates data or information and possibly recommends action based on results. * Ability to supervise or direct others by determining or interpreting work procedures, assigning specific duties, maintaining harmonious relations, and promoting efficiency. Resolves internal problems, conflicts, or grievances from staff; encourages cooperation among employees. * Demonstrates the ability to be responsible for achieving economies or preventing loss within the organization. Requires responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the supervising of personnel and equipment and/or protecting of people and property. * Knowledge of quantities, magnitudes, and forms and their relationships and attributes by the use of numbers and symbols. Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages. * Ability to read, write, and speak. Reads journals and manuals; composes specialized reports using proper format and grammar; speaks to groups of coworkers and people outside the organization. * Demonstrates the ability address the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures. Performs coordinating work involving guidelines and rules with constant problem solving; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressure. * Knowledge of consequences such as damage to property, loss of data or property, exposure of the organization to legal liability, or injury or death to individuals. Makes decisions with serious impact - affects most units in organization, and affects citizens; probability of loss of life and/or damage are likely. * Knowledge of inanimate objects such as substances, materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, or products. A thing is tangible and has shape, form, and other physical characteristics. Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items, such as computer, vehicles, or firearms. * Demonstrates the ability to be responsible for other people’s safety, either inherent in the job or to assure the safety of the general public. Requires considerable responsibility for the first-line supervision of the provision of continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical: * Requires medium work involving standing or walking some of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force on an occasional basis, and considerable dexterity and skill in operating machinery, or office equipment. Vision: * See in the normal visual range with or without correction. * Vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Hearing: * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing abilities that would permit effective communication with or without correction.

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and needs responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be 21 years of age. * Maintains all necessary requirements set forth by the Misdemeanor Probation Oversight Unit (MPOU). * Must have a clear criminal record. Must pass a thorough background check, including drug screening.
