What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Specialist position at Cherokee Strip Credit Union?
ROLE
Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, the Accounting Specialist is responsible for a variety of accounting assignments in accordance with established procedures, including support functions (filing and research) necessary to the overall accounting function. Serves as trusted support personnel to the Accounting Manager. This position is Hybrid, requiring a minimum of 2 working days in the office during a week. This position must adhere to the remote worker policies and procedures.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepares and records daily general ledger entries and reconciliations.
- Process Accounts Payable invoices daily, which includes the separation, distribution and filing of checks and AP related documentation.
- Prepare Form 1099 Miscellaneous and Form 945 reporting for outside accounting firm.
- Prepare and/or review reports to ensure dual control of duties.
- Works with other departments to resolve general ledger-related problems that become apparent during the reconciliation process and informs Accounting Manager of results.
- Assist in processing member incoming and outgoing wire transfers with 100% accuracy and maintain wire logs.
- Maintain communications with external bookkeeping team; Xtend SRS Bookkeeping
- Collect and process manual member fees and collection items.
- Actively partners with peers and Accounting Manager to keep audit and regulatory exceptions minimal.
- Continuous cross-training of other departmental duties and responsibilities.
- Ensures that the appropriate level of confidentiality is maintained in financial matters.
- Retain positive business relations with auditors, regulators, and vendors.
- Processes and submits information for quarterly reporting requirements.
- May assist with Asset/Liability Management, Month End duties, Vendor Management, and other delegated duties of the Accounting Manager.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
A Self-motivated person with exceptional problem solving and communications skills may achieve optimal success in the position. Basic understanding of accounting concepts and financial statements. Exceptional oral and written communication. Ability to think critically and problem solve through analyzing data and identifying discrepancies and variances. Proficient use of general equipment including Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to members, supervisor, and other associates of the credit union. Be able to handle multiple tasks at once. Must be able to work independently toward general results. Ability to read, write, and speak English.

Ability to prioritize multiple, and sometimes, conflicting tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 6 months – 1 year of related experience and/or training is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a Financial Institution is preferred.
Education: High school diploma/GED required. Minimum of an associate’s degree preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 5 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situations. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise.

Must be able to perform job functions with supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various instructions and follow oral instructions.
