The Environmental Services (EVS) Technician plays a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of Cherry Street Mission Ministries properties and ensuring a welcoming environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.

 

Purpose:

The purpose of this position a broad range of responsibilities, including janitorial tasks, groundskeeping, transportation of goods and people, equipment operation, event support, and preventive maintenance. The EVS Technician will also participate in training others in these duties, contribute to volunteer-led projects, and respond to after-hours emergencies as required. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of strong organizational skills, hands-on technical ability, and a commitment to maintaining safe, clean, and functional facilities. Flexibility is key, especially during snow removal season, with the need for a schedule that adapts to weather conditions and the demands of the role.

 

Essential Functions:

 

Janitorial & Groundskeeping Duties

  • Perform and lead daily janitorial tasks such as cleaning, sanitizing, and waste management throughout the property.
  • Maintain the grounds, ensuring outdoor spaces are clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Organize and restock cleaning and maintenance supplies as needed.
  • Oversee and complete pest control tasks on a daily basis.
  • Assist with snow removal on all properties, ensuring pathways and parking lots are safe for use.

Transportation & Logistics

  • Transport meals, goods, and people to various locations as required, ensuring punctuality and safety.
  • Operate, maintain, and train others on the use of various vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to mini-buses, box trucks, cargo vans, forklifts, scissor lifts, plow trucks, snow blowers, mowers, and pallet jacks.
  • Assist in transporting guests to and from shelters when required.
  • Complete pickups and deliveries for the organization as directed.

 

Event & Room Set-Up

  • Lead and assist in the set-up and tear-down of rooms and spaces for organizational and community events.
  • Coordinate the use of space to ensure efficient use of resources and the smooth execution of events.

 

Preventative Maintenance & Safety

  • Conduct ongoing preventive maintenance of properties, ensuring the functionality and safety of all buildings and systems.
  • Assist in maintaining safety systems (such as fire extinguishers and alarms) and keep them up to date.
  • Participate in the completion of EVS-related work orders and ensure that issues are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as part of the EVS on-call system.

 

Volunteer Coordination & Leadership

  • Work with the Operations Manager and Volunteers Coordinator to plan and lead volunteer projects, ensuring volunteers are properly trained and tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Participate in training other staff and volunteers on EVS tasks, processes, and systems.

 

Construction & Special Projects

  • Perform cleaning tasks and assist with maintenance duties related to on-going construction projects.
  • Assist with daily maintenance tasks as assigned by the Maintenance team.

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in environmental services, janitorial services, or facilities management preferred.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in a similar role involving janitorial, groundskeeping, transportation, or maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various types of vehicles and equipment (e.g., mini-buses, box trucks, scissor lifts, pallet jacks, floor buffers, etc.).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and use appropriate resources to resolve issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), and work in outdoor conditions during various weather situations.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules, especially during snow removal and emergency situations.
  • Basic knowledge of safety protocols and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Dependable and trustworthy, with a strong work ethic.
  • Adaptable and able to handle the physical and mental demands of the role.
  • Team-oriented with a focus on collaboration and serving the needs of the organization and community.

Licenses, Certificates, and Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required
  • Forklift certification preferred but not required (on-the-job certification provided)

Lifting Requirements

 

  • Sedentary work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing is required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
