What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grounds Crew Intern position at Chesapeake Baysox?
The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are searching for an intern to join the grounds staff for the 2025 season. As a grounds intern, you will work directly with the head groundskeeper on all field maintenance and game preparation.

- Perform work on all common grounds of PG County stadium on a weekly basis.
- Performs gardening and grounds maintenance in caring for turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and hard surfaces by using tools and power equipment.
- Work in conjunction with the Director of Grounds to ensure a safe and aesthetically pleasing professional baseball field.
- Clay repairs – the infield skin, mounds and home plate, and the warning track.
- Perform moisture management on infield skin.
- Cultural practices – mowing
- Assist in tarp pulls
- Performs gardening and grounds maintenance in caring for turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, and hard surfaces by using tools and power equipment.
- Must be able to endure extreme heat in the summer.
- Mow turf using both walk behind and riding mowers and fertilize turf, shrubs, ground cover, flowerbeds and trees.
- Operate power equipment such as: rototiller, sod cutter, soil compactor, chain saw, verticutter, hedge trimmer, blowers, mower, tractor, edger, aerial lifts, chain saws, chippers, mini-excavators, skid loaders, hand mowers, rototillers, rollers, lawn sweepers, leaf blowers, and salt spreaders.
- Cares for and maintains tools. Maintains and sharpens tools and makes minor repairs on equipment, as needed. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment.
- Safely operate team-owned vehicles and transport equipment.
- Weed shrub, ground cover, and flowerbeds. Sweep, rake, remove leaves and trash, and clean drains and gutters. Prune and shape trees and shrubs for improved health. Edge and trim ground cover around buildings, walks, walls, shrubs, trees, and lamp poles.
- Ability to work weekends and overtime when required.
- Ability to work during the mornings and/or afternoons of some game days, not just game shifts.
Required Experience:
- Candidate must be hard working, self-motivated, and able to work in a variety of weather extremes
- Preferred to have or be working towards a 2/4 Turf Degree
- Able to hustle around the stadium, lift 50lbs repetitively, and stand for long periods of time
- Must keep a professional appearance and act accordingly around professional athletes
