What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Technician position at Chesapeake College?
The General Technician works under the direction of the Maintenance & Energy Supervisor. This individual assists the HVAC, Plumbing, Grounds, and Electric Technicians, and provides facility-related services at the College’s campuses in Wye Mills, Cambridge, and occasionally, at off-campus locations. The General Technician has some grounds keeping responsibilities including snow removal. Some duties will require the ability to operate equipment such as backhoes, bobcats, and forklifts. This position may work independently at times to complete assigned tasks or under the supervision of a licensed tradesperson. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays, and college emergencies. This position is designated as “essential” and will require working outside normal work hours. Essential personnel may be called in to work outside of regular working hours to assist with inclement weather and other college activities.,
- Moves equipment, furniture, and completes set ups for college events and functions.
- Completes monthly sprinkler inspections and logs.
- Assists Trade Technicians in maintaining all facets of the College’s facilities systems and equipment.
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, bobcats, forklifts, trucks, personal lifts, mowing equipment.
- Changes HVAC air filters.
- Replaces light bulbs, water filters, plumbing fixtures and parts.
- Acquire and maintain all necessary certificates to operate equipment.
- Perform trade specific tasks under the direction of trade technicians.
- Other general maintenance duties as assigned, such as carpentry and painting.
- Performs other duties with various departments as assigned.

- Receive instructions through various communication media accurately and quickly.
- Convey answers or instructions to other workers accurately and quickly.
- Must be able to lift and move up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
- The worker will be subject to dust, noise, fumes, and odors.
- The workers will be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions.
- The physical activity of this position includes, but is not limited to: climbing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, twisting, sitting and feeling.
