POSITION SUMMARY
Provides technical and supervisory guidance and training to employees of the Claims unit regarding investigating, evaluating, and general claims management in accordance with Maryland Workers’ Compensation Law and internal guidelines. This position also works with claims management to ensure best practices are properly developed and implemented throughout the department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This role requires regular sitting, use of hands for handling objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required. The employee may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Office environment with a moderate noise level.
SALARY RANGE:
$83,250/yr - $129,040/yr (commensurate with experience)

POSITION SUMMARY

This position also works with claims management to ensure best practices are properly developed and implemented throughout the department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coaches, trains, mentors, develops, and provides direction and guidance to claims adjusters at various levels of experience.
- Supervises and independently reviews cases for proper handling and reserving in accordance with the Claims Operating Guidelines, Audit Protocols, and best practices established within the company for assigned claims personnel.
- Reviews and provides recommendations for claims with various levels of complexity.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the impact of Medicare on workers' compensation claims, including Medicare-Set Asides and Conditional Payments.
- Establishes and maintains open communication with employees, claimants, and attorneys to address and resolve issues.
- Supervises the performance management process for all assigned employees.
- Reviews and approves proposals for claim resolution, including settlement or stipulation, and provides appropriate analysis when additional authority is required.
- Reviews and adheres to Claims Operating Guidelines and communicates updates or modifications to staff regularly.
- Participates in recruitment and interviewing processes.
- Assists claims management in various projects, including training and other departmental initiatives.
- Supports corporate projects as needed.
- Provides professional representation and conducts on-site visits to policyholders or state agencies to review claims and services when appropriate.
- Analyzes and exhibits a strong understanding of claims financial exposure and its impact on the business and stakeholders.
- Inspires a culture of change and models the behaviors needed to drive and embed change.
- Develops strong, collaborative relationships within claims and across departments to identify areas for improvement and engage in cross-departmental development to support overall claims and corporate goals.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, along with an industry-related designation or equivalent education.
- Minimum of seven years of experience in workers’ compensation claims handling.
- Proven experience in supervision, training, and leading projects.
- Strong professional writing and PC skills.
- In-depth knowledge of Maryland Workers’ Compensation Law.
- Ability to manage caseloads at various levels of complexity.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Thorough understanding of workers' compensation calculations, including average weekly wage, disability ratings, and reserves.
