The SPD Operations Coordinator is responsible for the clinical and technical duties within the Sterile Processing Department. Activities are based on accepted standards of practice and are performed within the scope of education, training, and required experience. This position serves as clinical educator for SPD staff, is responsible for assisting in policy and procedure input and inventory management, and helps educate and in-service staff on new instruments and procedures in the Perioperative Services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
- Demonstrates knowledge of all SPD functions:
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of sterilization process
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding surgical procedures and terminology
- Maintain proficient understanding of aseptic/sterile technique and adhere to strict infection control practices
- Ensure established procedures and standards of practice are followed for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of reusable supplies and patient care equipment
- In coordination with Bio-Med, maintain a Preventative Maintenance I equipment repair record
- Ensure proper traffic flow patterns are utilized for handling supplies, maintain clean and dirty areas
- Monitor medications inventory supply for floor trays and specialty carts (i.e. PAR levels and expiration dates)
- Demonstrates knowledge of SPD financial management and cost containment:
- Review SPD operating budget with the Perioperative Services Manager and the SPD Nurse Manager, and provide input regarding supply and expense variances
- Provide input into SPD budgetary process (i.e. capital, expense/supply, operational, etc.)
- Establish internal inventory levels and maintain levels in accordance with set standards Establish par level stocks and monitors them for proper utilization; order inventory to maintain established par levels
- Send instruments for repair by following established protocol
- Communicate changes, revisions, broken instruments, and incomplete instrument sets to the Sterile Processing Manager and OR Specialty Nurses
- Maintain and update sterilization documentation data base count sheets and manuals to reflect changes in instrumentation and sterilization procedures; communicates changes to OR Specialty Nurses and Service Specialty Leaders
- Maintain and update procedure manuals for the department
- Assist with quarterly statistics, monthly activities reports, and safety inspections
- Assist in cost containment by obtaining pricing for purchasing and budgeting purposes
- Responsible for maintaining payroll information, inputting schedule, checking and completing daily/weekly assignments, and reporting pertinent information to Sterile Processing Manager
- Assist with monitoring overtime and flex staffing based on daily volume
- Demonstrates knowledge of planning and staff development:
- Provide input and conduct, for SPD staff, evaluations with collaboration from the Manager Sterile Processing Manager
- Ensure that the standards of operation of the department are in compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies (AAMI, AORN standards, and HFAP recommendations)
- Maintain responsibility for inputting and updating information regarding SPD staff compliance with instruments inventory into the tracking application
- Oversee assigned areas of the Sterile Processing Department; make and adjust assignments of co-workers as needed to ensure efficient running of the department
- Ensure department equipment is operated and maintained in proper working order
- Maintain continued education in the field of Sterile Processing operations and equipment through education, literature, and seminars. Provide instructions and in-services in new products, procedures and equipment in a manner that will identify and prevent resource loss and maintain safety
- Provide a comprehensive departmental orientation to all new personnel; maintain and update the Orientation and Competence Manual
- Develop and implement in-service required trainings, performance improvement activities, and ensure ongoing staff participation
- Conduct and report clinical performance monitors and recommend suggestions for departmental improvements
- Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
- Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
