Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; five years of increasingly responsible automotive experience including one year of supervisory or lead technician experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires experience in the maintenance and repair of medium / heavy diesel trucks or fire apparatus; considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools utilized in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and associated equipment. Ability to supervise staff and coordinate the operations and activities of a vehicle maintenance shop to include shop goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; to interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. The incumbent must be able to perform extremely physically demanding work on a routine basis; capable of performing tasks that require fine coordination and dexterity. Must be capable of wearing employer-provided protective clothing and equipment. Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsement and without restrictions; and certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia to perform vehicle safety inspections required within nine months of employment.
Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education / degree verification required.
This position is a federally regulated DOT position and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited.
Duties
Manages the daily operations of the maintenance shop in the repair, maintenance and service of County and Schools vehicles and associated equipment. Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of skilled technicians, administrative and other maintenance shop staff. Establishes schedules and methods for providing vehicle and equipment maintenance services. Monitors status of repair work on vehicles and equipment to ensure efficient turnaround time, and inspects work performed by technicians to ensure that proper work standards are maintained.
Interacts with customers to ensure timely response to customer needs; investigates and resolves complaints, problems, or concerns associated with shop services and activities. Makes regular shop safety inspections and ensures shop compliance with occupational safety health and environmental laws, regulations and department / division policies and procedures. Manages and maintains the operation of computerized systems for tracking vehicles and equipment, shop labor, parts inventory, vehicle utilization, billing, etc. Prepares and maintains a variety of correspondence, records, and reports (e.g., vehicle work orders, inspection forms, OSHA forms, performance evaluations, etc.), to provide accurate and current documentation of all shop activities. Considered essential (designated) personnel during adverse weather and emergency events. Perform other work as required.
