Job Description
The Fire / Life Safety Marshall works independently throughout all Communities, sites and non- residential properties to inspect our Fire / Life Safety features, training and capabilities and report on any findings that could create potential risk.
Serves as the Authority's primary safety liaison between the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and the Office of Emergency Management & Communications (OEMC) in support of Authority and community safety and preparedness. Under general supervision, plans and leads all activities and operations within the Authority relating to fire protection and safety, Coordinates the creation, implementation, and maintenance of the Authority's system-wide strategy for smoke and fire hazards. Conducts inspections, trainings and debriefings, and coordinates activities with fire departments, especially the CFD.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, Implement and maintain procedures and protocols for inspections, drills, tabletops, and other Fire / Life Safety programs as required or needed.
- Maintain relationships with Security Vendors, Local Fire Department resources, and partners that provide services at our sites and in our communities.
- Meet with Property Management companies to share information and confirm deficiencies found.
- Complete property tours to inspect and report conditions of exit lighting and signage, fire extinguishers, fire panel condition, smoke detection, scheduled spot checks of units, record keeping on fire / life safety complaints and remediation, condition of fire doors, training, and capability to respond of on-site Security personnel, and any other items within the scope of Fire / Life Safety.
- Conducts training, debriefings, and participates in live exercises related to fire and smoke incidents, including fire and evacuation drills.
- Manages Authority safety emergency response training programs to ensure effective response by the Authority in emergency and disaster situations.
- Reports to the scene of various safety situations.
- Work with Property Management and Security vendors on training to ensure that all vendors are prepared and aware of what to do in emergencies.
- Work with the Fire Department on best practices to ensure resident safety during emergencies.
- Oversees the development and implementation of the Authority's fire protection and safety programs.
- Assist in training and implementation of any new resources, protocols, and procedures.
- Conduct meetings, townhalls, tabletops, drills, etc...., to develop efficient emergency response.
- Respond to, and appropriately, handle emergency situations that may arise in a calm, professional and effective manner.
- Develop knowledge of the facilities and services of the surrounding community.
- Handle complaints in a helpful, kind, and courteous manner. Resolve the situations you can and calmly find assistance for those issues you cannot resolve.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- May be required to work various extended or irregular hours (including afternoons, nights, or weekend shifts) to respond to CTA safety related issues or emergencies.
- Must be available to respond to calls or email inquiries outside regular work hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a High School Diploma or GED. Verifiable college level coursework in Fire Sciences / Security / Risk Management required, with a minimum of 5-6 years related experience. A combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Must be physically able to walk the buildings as needed including ascending and descending stairwells. Must possess strong communication skills with a temperament and ability to interact with individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, in a courteous, friendly and professional manner. Ability to act quickly and decisively in emergencies. Ability to collaborate with others. Must be a self-starter and a problem-solver. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook) is mandatory.
Must possess a good driving record. This position will require working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. The Safety and Security Department is a 24 / 7 service provider. Hours can change to reflect business demand, missions, or special projects.
Must complete Chicago Fire Department Fire Safety Director training within 3 months of appointment.
