Job Summary:
The Municipal Meter/Utility Technician is responsible for reading assigned water meters, completing service orders, and performing customer service tasks. Duties include new service turn-on requests, service turn-off requests, meter leak checks, re-reads, and other field-related activities. This role participates in the monthly cutoff process and ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. The position requires extended knowledge of meter locations and effective communication with utility customers and other departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meter Reading: Accurately read and record water meter data as assigned.
  • Service Orders: Complete service orders, including new service activations, turn-offs, leak checks, re-reads, and related tasks.
  • Monthly Cutoff Process: Assist with the scheduled monthly cutoff process.
  • Customer Service Requests: Address and resolve customer service issues related to meters and water usage.
  • Field Training: Train and supervise meter readers in the field to ensure accurate and efficient performance.
  • Extended Knowledge of Meter Locations: Maintain detailed knowledge of meter locations within the service area.
  • City Vehicle Use: Safely operate and oversee the assigned city vehicle, adhering to maintenance schedules and security protocols.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Coordinate with the Public Works Department, Development Services Department, and contractors as needed for field operations.
  • Issue Investigation: Investigate and report any meter-related issues that arise during operations.
  • Customer Interaction: Interact professionally and courteously with utility customers at their locations.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Specialized training or on-the-job education in related skills preferred.
  • Relevant experience in meter reading, utilities, or a related field is beneficial.

Communication Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.

Critical Thinking Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Required: Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
  • Preferred: Additional certifications related to utilities or water systems (not specified).

Software Skills:

  • Basic proficiency in alphanumeric data entry.

Supervision Received:

  • Operates under general supervision, with the ability to work independently on routine tasks while consulting supervisors on complex issues.

Planning and Decision-Making:

  • Responsible for planning time, methods, and sequencing of personal work assignments.
  • Occasionally assists in planning work for others within a limited scope.
  • Frequently makes decisions of minor to moderate importance affecting team operations and customer satisfaction.

Responsibility for Others:

  • No direct supervision responsibilities but is expected to train and mentor meter readers in the field.
  • Maintains high performance standards and communicates relevant information to supervisors.

Public Contact:

  • Occasional interaction with residents on routine matters, requiring professionalism and courtesy.

Employee Contact:

  • Regular coordination with internal departments to ensure effective operations.

Use of Machines, Equipment, and Computers:

  • Regular use of equipment such as computers, smartphones, and copiers.
  • Daily operation of an assigned city vehicle.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to variable noise levels and environmental elements.
  • Occasional irregular workdays or extended hours as needed.

Physical Activities:

  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, crawling, and kneeling.
  • Ability to operate equipment with finger dexterity.
  • Near vision to review smartphone screens and work orders.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs (frequently up to 25 lbs).
  • Must be flexible and capable of using hands and arms effectively.
  • Driving an assigned vehicle daily.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive per the United States Department of Transportation and Oklahoma workplace drug and alcohol testing regulations. The role is subject to regular and random drug and alcohol testing. A medical marijuana certification will not exempt employees from the testing process or the consequences of positive results.
