Job Summary:
The Municipal Meter/Utility Technician is responsible for reading assigned water meters, completing service orders, and performing customer service tasks. Duties include new service turn-on requests, service turn-off requests, meter leak checks, re-reads, and other field-related activities. This role participates in the monthly cutoff process and ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. The position requires extended knowledge of meter locations and effective communication with utility customers and other departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meter Reading: Accurately read and record water meter data as assigned.
- Service Orders: Complete service orders, including new service activations, turn-offs, leak checks, re-reads, and related tasks.
- Monthly Cutoff Process: Assist with the scheduled monthly cutoff process.
- Customer Service Requests: Address and resolve customer service issues related to meters and water usage.
- Field Training: Train and supervise meter readers in the field to ensure accurate and efficient performance.
- Extended Knowledge of Meter Locations: Maintain detailed knowledge of meter locations within the service area.
- City Vehicle Use: Safely operate and oversee the assigned city vehicle, adhering to maintenance schedules and security protocols.
- Interdepartmental Liaison: Coordinate with the Public Works Department, Development Services Department, and contractors as needed for field operations.
- Issue Investigation: Investigate and report any meter-related issues that arise during operations.
- Customer Interaction: Interact professionally and courteously with utility customers at their locations.
- Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Specialized training or on-the-job education in related skills preferred.
- Relevant experience in meter reading, utilities, or a related field is beneficial.
Communication Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
Critical Thinking Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Required: Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.

- Operates under general supervision, with the ability to work independently on routine tasks while consulting supervisors on complex issues.
