Child Lane provides Early Care and Education, Nutrition, and Family Support Services to the Long Beach and Harbor communities. Founded in 1984, Child Lane has grown from serving a handful of children to serving nearly 6,000 children a day through our Early Care and Education Program and Nutrition Program.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Child and Family Counselor provides services to address the needs of children and families needing additional support through case management, parent education, assessment, and advocacy. The Counselor implements activities to increase families’ knowledge of child development and improve their children's social-emotional health and well-being. The Counselor also serves as the site supervisor for Child Lane’s internship program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Case Management:
- Provide individualized case management services to families, including service coordination, advocacy, and enhanced referrals.
- Maintain detailed documentation of activities performed, service plans, and family data.
- Ensure appropriate follow-up is conducted on every case.
- Develop relationships with service providers to ensure families benefit from community resources. Maintain up-to-date resource and referral information.
- Facilitate service meetings for families with limited access to time and transportation.
Parent Education and Support:
- Coordinate and present quarterly workshops to engage families and address topics of interest and concern.
- Conduct one-on-one and group parenting sessions.
- Produce and distribute a monthly newsletter with parenting resources and strategies.
Observations and Assessments:
- Conduct on-site observations of children identified by teachers as needing support to succeed in the classroom.
- Provide consultation to teaching staff and providers in addressing issues impacting children’s development and behavior.
- Oversee the Ages and Stages Questionnaire screening process, providing guidance and support in areas requiring intervention.
Internship:
- Supervise fieldwork students.
- Serve as the liaison between institutions of higher education and Child Lane.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualification Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Social Work. LCSW preferred.
- Two years of experience post MSW graduation.
- Experience working with children 0-5 and their families. Experience in child development or infant mental health settings preferred.
- Ability to communicate in English and Spanish.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with diverse populations.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- High degree of professionalism and accountability.
- Excellent attendance and punctuality.
- Valid California Driver’s License and transportation.
Physical Requirements
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; strength to lift and carry files weighing up to 10 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
