Summary: The Business Manager oversees the finance and operations functions and staff at a school for 230-300 toddler through adolescent students and 50-80 staff members. The Business Manager is responsible for accounting, human resources, reception, campus safety, facilities, and kitchen personnel and supervises activities in these areas. The ideal business manager is reliable, decisive, flexible, outcome-oriented, and performance-driven. While supervised by the Head of School (HOS) this position also works closely with the Board of Trustees and the Executive, Finance, and Campus Planning Committees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Management
- Lead the school’s annual financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting efforts, coordinating with the Head of School, reporting to the Board Finance Committee and the Board as a whole.
- Generate accurate and timely periodic financial reports for the Board Finance Committee and Board of Trustees; attend monthly board finance committee and Board of Trustee meetings.
- Take primary responsibility for financial management, including supervising accounting staff and ensuring accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in the accounting system.
- Work with the auditor designated by the Board of Directors to facilitate the annual audit process.
- Manage cash, investments, and credit accounts; monitor and report on compliance with financial conditions for tax-exempt bond agreements and any other financial instruments held by the school.
- Ensure timely nonprofit federal and state tax filings and manage property tax exemption applications.
- Provide accurate and timely reports to the Tuition Assistance Committee, participating as needed to support decision-making.
- Support development efforts with accurate financial information required for grant applications and review budgets developed for the same.
- Review and negotiate leases and service contracts.
- Responsible for all areas of student tuition billing, including establishing, maintaining, and consistently communicating all billing policies to families; direct entry of tuition and fees into Reddiker SIS; ensuring timely response to parent inquiries; and overseeing accounts receivable.
Human Resources Management
- Oversee semimonthly payroll
- Supervise HR manager in executing the following:
- Management of employee policies and handbook
- Management of the full benefit package with brokers and ensure 401(k) plan, flexible spending account, and Affordable Care Act compliance
- Establishment and maintenance of an equitable salary structure and management of annual pay increases
- Conduct regular performance reviews of all direct reports, as planned by the Head of School.
Facilities and General Administration
- Lead school emergency team and emergency planning efforts.
- Manage risk, acting as liaison to insurance agent and school attorney.
- Oversee accounting, human resources, reception, campus safety, facilities, and kitchen teams, and other direct reports, and ensure effective execution of their responsibilities.
- Maintain punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field
- Five or more years of accounting or financial management experience and/or training
- Two or more years of supervisory experience
- One or more years of business operations experience in an independent school setting (preferred)
- One or more years experience managing operations covering multiple areas of responsibility (preferred)
- Equivalent combination of education and experience

JOB SUPERVISION:
- The Head of School supervises this position. The HOS will meet regularly throughout the year, offer observations, guidance, and help set professional goals.
- The HOS sets the schedule for yearly evaluations related to employment and makes all final decisions regarding employment.

Salary : $95,000 - $130,000
