Job Overview
The Controller is responsible for leading all day-to-day accounting functions and ensuring financial accuracy, internal controls, and compliance for His Ideas, Inc. This position manages the organization’s general ledger, financial reporting, audits, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Controller collaborates closely with the Director of Business Operations to support financial analysis, grant compliance, and process improvement initiatives. This role supervises accounting staff and serves as the primary liaison for auditors, ensuring the integrity of financial data to support sustainable growth and mission impact.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations.
- Lead and manage the monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reconciliations and reporting.
- Prepare internal financial reports and dashboards for leadership review; assist in preparing board-facing reports.
- Support the Director of Business Operations in the preparation and monitoring of the agency’s annual budget and financial forecasts.
- Manage the audit process, including the preparation of audit schedules, coordination with external auditors, and timely completion of financial statements and IRS Form 990.
- Monitor and strengthen internal controls, financial procedures, and policy compliance; recommend and implement improvements.
- Track restricted funds and support grant reporting to ensure proper allocation and compliance with funder requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal financial regulations.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and ongoing development.
- Lead or assist with implementation and maintenance of financial systems and software.
- Provide timely, detailed financial data and analysis to inform operational decisions made by the Director of Business Operations and executive leadership.
Experience
- Experience in nonprofit accounting preferred, especially managing government contracts or grants.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and internal controls.
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate financial concepts to non-financial audiences.
