Position Summary: The Deputy Chief Financial Officer reports directly to Children's Aid's Chief Financial Officer (CFO). There is primary responsibility for oversight of an employee group of approximately 24 team members in areas of grants and contracts, accounting, treasury, payroll, accounts payable, compliance and reporting.

Essential Duties:

  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the team.
  • Facilitate communications within the team and with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment. Further to model an effective, positive culture for the Fiscal team emphasizing professionalism, clarity, customer service and competence.
  • Coordinate the timing and tasks within the monthly, quarterly and year-end financial close process ensuring their timely, accurate and efficient completion.
  • Ensure an environment of appropriate internal controls and fiscal integrity supports the effective and efficient operation of Children's Aid (CA) programs and administrative functions, in accordance with all applicable legal, regulatory, funder and best-practice standards and requirements.
  • Oversee the delegation of work responsibilities by the managers and seek to balance tasks and roles while promoting cross-training and building in overlapping set of skills within the team.
  • Assist in preparing periodic and ad-hoc analyses or reports concerning financial matters for CA senior and executive management, the CA Board of Trustees and other key external parties (government agencies, private funders, credit rating agencies, regulators, lending entities, etc.)
  • As a member of the senior CA Fiscal leadership team the Deputy CFO will ensure the smooth operation amongst central Fiscal operations and internal Division budgetary and financial reporting program areas.
  • Collaborate with program leaders and their support teams to explore how the central finance function can support program operations and to help clarify where financial elements might impact their areas.
  • Oversee controllership roles and the grants and contracts area. Evaluate their performance, implement professional growth opportunities, mentor and coach staff, and determine levels of authority and decision-making protocols for those areas.
  • Coordinate the development of communications materials regarding financial policies, administrative procedures, calendars, checklists and due date mappings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required (Master's level preferred) from an accredited educational institution in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration and at least ten years of progressively responsible professional accounting and/or financial management experience, including supervision of multiple accounting/financial functions and staff.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in finance in a (government grant partially-funded) not-for-profit organization.

Key Competencies:

  • Strong command of a variety of technologies including but not limited to Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains or similar mid-level accounting systems, MS advanced Office suite, online banking portals, expense workflow processes, cloud-based platforms including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Proven ability to analyze and interpret fiscal and accounting data while overseeing the operation of financial systems in a complex not-for-profit organization. Able to coordinate the development and maintenance of fiscal operations policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), strong work ethic, and professionalism in engagement with supervisors, peers and junior staff within CA; and necessary external entities such as CA Trustees, public and private funders, auditors, regulators and oversight agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in business process improvement involving information technology solutions and changes and improvements to fiscal systems and practices; along with ease in staff training and development.
  • Leadership ability to work closely with other CA fiscal units, five program and multiple administrative units across CA in order to ensure efficient and effective operations overall.

  • Possessing personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the Children's Aid mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for fiscal functions.
