A Brief Overview
The Public Relations Strategist is responsible for the ongoing management and growth of Children's Nebraska's reputation through effective relationship-building and communications across channels with key audiences. Serves as Children's liaison with national, industry and local media, pitching and facilitating stories and securing positive coverage. Plans and executes social media and news media strategies aligned with Children's mission, values and key service area priorities. Exceptional copywriting, storytelling, copy editing and interviewing skills required for content development across web, social channels and internal and external publications, along with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, agile business environment. Applies strategic prioritization, critical thinking and time management. Monitors and measures Children's reputation across online channels, focused on insights to increase engagement.
Essential Functions
Social Media Management and Content Development
- Oversee day-to-day operations, content development and posting across Children's social media sites; capture photos / video to support social media needs; ensure authenticity and consistency of brand voice, messaging and graphic standards. Adhere to social media policies and best practices.
- Develop the overarching social media strategy and plan for each channel, optimizing each channel to support search, engagement and growth, in close collaboration with other Marketing & Communications colleagues (e.g., digital team, videographers).
- Monitor and engage with Children's social media presence and communities; participate in real-time online conversations, offering resources and solutions as appropriate or elevating issues as they arise.
- Cultivate and maintain excellent working relationships with Children's physicians, team members and supporters to generate stories, images and other engaging social media content.
- Keep abreast of the competitive environment, clinical advances, technological innovations and other trends to strengthen public relations plans and activities. Build strong relationships with operational partners and communicate information to key stakeholders.
- Measure, report and evaluate media relations and social media performance metrics regularly; recommend adjustments to social media strategies and tactics to improve.
Media Relations
Facilitate day-to-day media relations activities, both responsive and proactive.Prepare Children's experts for interviews to ensure clear, effective messaging and brand positioning.Cultivate and manage relationships with national and local journalists and key influencers, including developing targeted media lists, sharing collateral on an ongoing basis and regularly facilitating interviews and press briefings between Children's leaders / experts and reporters.Design and implement multichannel communications plans and media outreach strategies.Write press materials including news releases, media advisories and pitches.Utilize all communications tools (video, social media, podcasts, events, publications) to maximize media coverage, and contribute creative ideas to better leverage these channels.Protect patient confidentiality via the facilitation and secure handling of media / marketing authorization forms.Manage / escort media attendees on Children's properties and at events.Track and analyze the quality and quantity of media coverage.Help prepare content for website as needed.Serve on media on-call rotation team and respond to calls from the media during and after regular working hours, on weekends and holidays.Respond to routine, sensitive or urgent information requests in accordance with organization policies and guidelines and HIPAA regulations, as part of Children's crisis communications team.Gather information and escalate sensitive issues to appropriate leaders. Prepare and distribute media responses as needed.Public Relations Strategic Support for Key Service Areas
Serve as key PR / communications advisor to select strategic service areas (e.g., Hematology / Oncology; Children's Physicians), partnering with marketing strategists to develop comprehensive marketing and communications plans.Meet regularly with operational leaders to understand and align with service area needs and opportunities and adapt communications strategies accordingly.Write and / or produce strategic content across channels to support service area goals and strengthen reputation.Education Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree with a focus on Communications, PR, journalism and / or marketing RequiredExperience Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years' demonstrated experience coordinating and managing PR, social and news media in a corporate or nonprofit communications environment. with preference for formal PR training / background. Required andExperienced and proficient with social media platforms, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, TikTok and other new and emerging channels. Required andExperienced in writing, editing, curating and crafting content for website and social media spaces; excellent editing and proofreading skills. Required andExperience with media monitoring software (e.g., Truescope, Cision) and social media management / monitoring platforms (e.g., Sprout Social, Hootsuite).
