A Brief Overview

This position includes a community outreach component.


Responsible for all functions related to the Safety Center. Assist in the implementation and maintenance of prevention programs for the Injury Prevention Program and Pediatric Regional Resource Trauma Center.

What you will do

  • Act as the Coordinator of the Safety Center
  • Monitor certification and train all staff working in the safety center
  • Select and maintain an appropriate supply of safety devices and educational brochures.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the convenience store on daily operations for the safety center.
  • Create and maintain a database to collect and track information on items sold, donated items and customers.
  • Ensure that families are provided with accurate, thorough safety education, which addresses their individual needs.
  • Ensure that the Safety Center is staffed by qualified individuals during all hours of operation.
  • Staff the Safety Center
  • Develop and maintain an efficient system to identify and coordinate volunteers and faculty.
  • Oversee Safety Center volunteers.
  • Identify programs, such as the Community Nursing Advocacy Fellowship (CNAF), to secure volunteers.
  • Create and maintain a family risk assessment tool to identify risk factors for the top unintentional injuries.
  • Maintain, identify and/or design education sheets.
  • Maintain own knowledge and expertise by staying up-to-date on current recommendations and injury prevention practices.
  • Maintain certification as a car seat technician.
  • Maintain knowledge of Special Needs safety equipment and needs.
  • Act as a public spokesperson on the safety center and prevention issues.
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of press coverage with Public Relations related to the safety center.
  • Author prevention articles on the safety center.
  • Develop brochures, audiovisual aids and presentation handouts.
  • Assist with updating the internet website.
  • Generate a semi-annual report documenting program statistics and accomplishments.
  • Author a prevention article for publication or present a lecture and/or poster presentation at a regional or national conference every 2 years.
  • Participate in activities of the Injury Prevention Program
  • Act as a safety expert resource to families.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of Safety Programs.
  • Participate in the Safe Kids Southeastern Pennsylvania Coalition.
  • Staff community events and drive Mobile Safety Center to events.
  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays at community events (approximately 12 per year).
  • Maintain national child passenger safety technician certification.
  • Identify, pursue and obtain sources of program support and/or grant funding.
  • Coordinate with Development on grant proposals.
  • Seek and obtain funding through other venues.
  • Complete grant proposals and reports as needed.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Public Health, Health Education or related field Required
  • Master's Degree Public Health or Health Education Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Community or Public Health Educational experience Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate a company vehicle and/or be insured on a CHOP policy.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and to collaborate effectively
  • Strong written and speaking communication skills

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License - Department of Motor Vehicles - upon hire - Required and
  • Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) - National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (NCPSCTP) - within 3 months - Required
