Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Public Safety directs and coordinates the activities of the Department of Public Safety, enforcing applicable university regulations and government safety requirements. This role promotes and ensures the safety of students, faculty, staff, and property.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Recommend and establish policies and procedures governing security operations; disseminate information on current or revised standards.
- Provide direction and supervision of security personnel; monitor work performance to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, institutional, and departmental laws, policies, and guidelines.
- Schedule and monitor the work performance of public safety personnel.
- Develop and submit budget recommendations; manage approved budgets in accordance with university policy.
- Serve as the liaison with local law enforcement and medical personnel to seek or provide assistance, coordinate investigations, and ensure compliance with established regulations.
- Stay abreast of safety and security best practices and trends.
- Participates in the investigation of major campus incidents.
- Coordinate the registration of vehicles, recommend parking regulations, and process traffic ticket appeals while maintaining related records.
- Assist with the compilation, completion, and reporting requirements of the Clery Act as set forth by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Provide a customer service-oriented approach while interacting with Chowan University faculty, staff, students, and guests.
- Develop and build teams by encouraging, coaching, and fostering mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.
- Ensure periodic inspection of fire safety equipment.
- Coordinate student and guest transportation to and from public transportation.
- Maintain traffic markings on campus streets and in parking areas.
- Collaborate with Residence Life and other departments to develop and present life skills programming.
- Perform other related functions and duties as requested by the Associate VP for Campus Life.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma Required (Bachelor’s Degree a plus).
- Over 4 years of experience in law enforcement as a certified police officer.
- Must possess active BLET certification in North Carolina.
